Welcome to this week's newsletter
Editorial - All Exporters Seem to be Courting China
US pork exports during November totalled 383.2 million pounds, 11.3 per cent more than 12 months earlier and the largest monthly total since October 2008, according to industry experts. They add that although 2009 pork exports were down compared to 2008, last year was easily the second best year ever for US pork exports. US pork exports in 2010 are expected to be back close to the 2008 record, they predict.
So where will all this pig meat go? The answer, it seems, will be China. Mexico, Russia and China as the key markets to watch during 2010 as they will strongly influence prices.
But the US is not the only country courting China as a destination for its pig meat. This week, Canada Pork International said it is preparing to step up the promotion of Canadian pork and pork products internationally with a focus on specific key markets, particularly China. And Ireland's Bord Bia is also predicting that 2010 offers a great chance for the EU to grow its share of Chinese pork imports.
With all that competition, exporters are likely to find the international market very challenging in the coming year.
