Editorial - Latest EU Pig Census Reveals More Sows but Fewer Pigs
Figures are now available for the May/June 2009 census of pig numbers in those EU countries that conduct a count at that time – now the top ten pig-producing Member States. There were 130.7 million pigs registered in those countries, which is almost 1.5 million (or 1.1 per cent) fewer than in the previous census in November/December 2008. However, there were 195,000 (1.7 per cent) more breeding sows at just under 12 million.
Germany remains the top EU country in terms of pigs, and both total pigs and breeding sows were up marginally compared to the previous census. Number 2 in the rankings was Spain, where both the total herd and sow numbers were down slightly. The Netherlands reported a 9.3 per cent increase in the breeding herd since the previous count. The most dramatic change was a 22-per-cent slump in the total number of pigs in Romania, continuing the decline in pig industry in that country.
And finally, one piece of good news: this week has seen a lull in the number of reports of H1N1 influenza in pigs across the world.
