Editorial - China Agrees to Import US Pork Again

The United States and China have reached an agreement to reopen the Chinese market to US pork imports, a development that has been welcomed by the National Pork Producers Council of the US, which said it would help struggling pork producers.

In the EU last week, the European Parliament's Environment and Consumer Protection Committee voted in favour of requiring country of origin (COOL) to be labelled on pork and other single-ingredient products. The decision must come as a welcome relief to producers in those countries with higher health and/or welfare standards.

Two research reports released in the last week may interest producers. The first was from Australia, where an encapsulated zinc oxide product was found to reduce post-weaning diarrhoea significantly in piglets. High levels of zinc in the feed were banned in the EU some years ago because of the adverse effects of this mineral on the environment. This latest research demonstrated, however, that much lower levels of zinc are effective when it is fed in encapsulated form, and that the effects on the environment are thus greatly diminished.

The second paper, from France, investigated the causes of summer infertility in sows. This had been assumed to be caused by high temperatures for both sows and boars but the latest research shows the primary factor responsible is daylength, with heat stress being a secondary factor.

And finally, Russia continues to report cases of both African Swine Fever and Classical Swine Fever, mostly in the wild boar population.

We have 5 new features this week:

Poultry and Pig Sectors in Argentina: Husbandry Practice and Animal Welfare
Following a study of pig and poultry producers in Argentina, there seems to be considerable scope for farmers to raise the welfare standards – particularly for sows and laying hens, according to a new report from the Agricultural Economics Research Institute (LEI) of Wageningen University. The authors, led by Peter van Horne, suggest that there would be a ready market in the European Union for such high-welfare animal products, providing that appropriate standards are set and can be verified.
Lysine Requirement Affected by Gender, Weight but Not PCV2 Vaccination
PCV2 vaccination did not increase the lysine requirement for growing and finishing barrows and gilts, according to paper presented at the Kansas Swine Day 2009 by N.W. Shelton. Differences in requirement were found between gilts and barrows as well as between growing and finishing pigs.
Which Disease Will Be Next?
