Editorial - EU Vets Review Pig Castration
The Federation of Veterinarians of Europe (FVE) has reviewed and updated its first position paper on pig castration, which was published in 2001.
In its review, FVE concluded that "surgical castration without anaesthesia and analgesia should be avoided. Surgical castration, when necessary, should be performed by veterinarians under general or local anaesthesia with additional prolonged analgesia." This also implies that adequate anaesthetics and analgesics "should be authorised for piglets in all countries".
On immunocastration, the FVE review stated: "Depending on the acceptance by the consumer, immunocastration could be a socially viable alternative and should be considered."
Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute (AFBI) of Northern Ireland has published a report on its comparison of terminal sires. The previous preferred sire in Northern Ireland, the Landrace, fell out of favour as the breed was thought to be susceptible to post-weaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS), and the Pietrain and Tempo became more popular choices.
A trial conducted at AFBI and co-funded by DARD, Pig ReGen Ltd and the British Pig Executive (BPEX) compared progeny from sires of the Tempo, Landrace, Pietrain (Austrian) and Pietrain (Belgium) breeds.
The researchers found a similar margin over feed using the Tempo and Pietrain Austrian genetics. However, the meat from the Pietrain Austrian pigs had more drip loss than that of Tempo pigs. This study also suggests that the carcass weight of Tempo and Pietrain pigs could be increased to 88kg with no detrimental effects on grading although increasing carcass weight appeared to reduce meat quality.

We have 5 new features this week:
Costs of Future Welfare, Environmental Regulations to Dutch Pig Farmers
New regulations on animal welfare and ammonia emissions due to come into effect in the Netherlands in 2013 will cost €240 per fattening pig place and €500 per sow, according to a new report from the Agricultural Economics group of Wageningen University Research. And with fewer than 60 per cent of farms in a financial position to make the necessary investments, pig numbers could fall significantly. The report is summarised by Jackie Linden, editor of ThePigSite.
Impacts of Increasing Meat Consumption
Continuing along the existing global trajectory of increasing meat and dairy consumption is likely to lead to further agricultural
intensification of both crop yields and farm animal production systems plus, in the case of the ‘Western high-meat’ diet, massive land use
change, according to the report, Eating the Planet from Compassion in World Farming.
Energy-Efficient Fans for Swine Production
Advice on comparing and choosing the right fans for pig houses from Professor Jay Harmon, Dr Mark Hanna and Dr Dana Petersen of Iowa State University Extension.
