Editorial: Market Warning over Complacency in the US
US market analyst Dr Steve R. Meyer from Paragon Economics the last week issued a warning to the US pig industry not to get carried away by improvements in the markets.
He warned that there have been several cases of H1N1 flu virus in the south east of the country and said that this should serve as a reality check to the industry.
Meanwhile, Glen Grimes and Ron Plain report that the USDA has lowered their forecast of 2010 pork production by 100 million pounds following the March hogs and pigs report and raised their forecast of 2010 price by $3/cwt live. The higher expected price has caused them to lower that forecast of pork exports.
On the regulatory front, the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service has altered its a advice on humane handling of animals at slaughter.
The new notice includes information on conducting and documenting humane handling activities, dealing with noncompliance, Humane-handling Activities Tracking System (HATS) categories, identifying noncompliance trends and data analysis.
In New Zealand, the industry has had to face criticisms from animal welfare campaigners, who have criticised pig producers for cruelty following a TV programme about the treatment of pigs in intensive production systems.
In the UK, more than 300 pig units will be invited to take part in the biggest ever welfare survey ever conducted by the English pig industry.
BPEX’s ‘real welfare’ project is a new management tool for pig-keepers. It will help them improve the welfare of their pigs by scoring a number of meaningful welfare indicators, such as tail and body lesions, and lameness.
And it should also provide scientifically robust data to counter any unfounded claims by vegetarian and animal welfare groups.
