Welcome to this week's newsletter
Editorial - Latest Health Survey Flawed
After reviewing nearly 1,600 studies, researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health have concluded in the last week that eating processed meats – such as bacon, sausage or processed deli meats – is associated with a 42 per cent higher risk of heart disease and a 19 per cent higher risk of type 2 diabetes.
However, a spokesperson for the Canadian Pork Council says that the study relied on epidemiological research and that it is hard to draw substantial conclusions about one type of food through this type of work.
She explained that the study participants tended to have a generally unhealthy life-style, including smoking, taking little exercise and being overweight, all known risk factors for chronic disease. These factors make it difficult to identify any one food or food group as being the cause of their illness.
Serious diseases continue to hit the pig industry across the world: foot-and-mouth disease is causing significant losses as it spreads across Miyazaki in western Japan, and Viet Nam's Minister of Agriculture has warned of possible future pig meat shortages as blue ear disease continues to cause havoc in the country's northern provinces. And after a recent lull, a further case of African swine fever has been reported in Russia.
Owing to a public holiday in the UK next Monday, our next newsletter will be sent out on Tuesday 1 June.
