Editorial - EU Confirms Sow Stall Ban

The European Commission (EC) will not allow a delay in implementing the ban on the use of individual sow stalls, the Directorate for Health and Consumers has informed animal welfare campaigners, Eurogroup for Animals.

In recent weeks, some European pig farmers have been calling for an extension to the phase-out period for sow stalls as they say they are not yet prepared for the ban. In response to Eurogroup's request for a clarification of the EU's current position, the director of the EC animal welfare department has said that the Commission has no intention to delay the entry into force of the ban on sow stalls in 2012.

This week, the EC is encouraging low-cost practices and educational strategies to promote animal welfare in Latin America by organising two workshops in Brazil.

New outbreaks of Foot and Mouth disease (FMD) have been reported in Hong Kong and Tibet. The two outbreaks of FMD in February this year were caused by a new strain of the virus to the region. There have been two more outbreaks of African swine fever in the Rostov region of Russia.

And finally, researchers in Malaysia have found that Nipah disease can be spread to pigs and humans by bats.

PCV2 Vaccination Strategy Experiment
Piglets that had received the piglet vaccine had significantly lower PCV2 viraemia at 18 weeks of age than did either unvaccinated pigs or those which were from vaccinated mothers only but thus was not reflected in a noticeable improvement in health status, according to the final report of this experiment from BPEX.
Gilt Management and Integration
Pig veterinarian, Mark White, discusses quarantine, acclimatisation, vaccination and the right timing for the introduction of gilts into the breeding herd in a recent Health Bulletin from NADIS.
