Editorial - Pigs and Disease in the News
While foot and mouth disease (FMD) continues to spread in cattle and pigs across the Miyazaki region of Japan, Canadian producers have been warned to be on the look-out for signs of transmissible gastroenteritis (TGE), a viral disease of pigs that has been identified on one farm with two sites located in South Central Manitoba.
TGE does not affect humans and is not considered a food safety risk but it spreads easily from pig to pig, causing vomiting and diarrhoea resulting in particularly high losses among piglets in the first week of life.
In the EU, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has published an evaluation of factors that may contribute to the spread of MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) in pig holdings in the European Union.
While most MRSA infections are transmitted through direct or indirect human-to-human contact, farmers, veterinarians and their families can also be exposed to the bacteria through contact with infected animals. There is no evidence that MRSA can be transmitted to humans through food.
EFSA's survey shows that larger pig holdings are more likely to be contaminated with MRSA, and the findings also suggests that the bacteria are transmitted through the movement of animals between breeding and fattening farms.
And finally, European pig vets have decided to set up a new association, the European Association of Porcine Health Management (EAPHM).
The objectives of the new association are primarily educational to increase contact and interaction across an increasingly borderless Europe but also to represent its interests and views on increasingly important aspects of welfare, health and production that are on the horizon.
