Editorial - An Eventful World Pork Expo
World Pork Expo, a leading annual event for the global pig industry, took place last week in Des Moines, Iowa, US, with strong representation from ThePigSite.
Among the news revealed at WPX was that South Korea's Economic Affairs Minister, Jong Hyun Choi, backed calls by the US National Pork Producers Council (NPPC) for ratification of the Korea-US free trade agreement. The US pig meat industry called for the swift ratification of free trade agreements with Colombia and Panama too, in order to help US producers.
A warning came that although the US pig meat industry has returned to profit over the last three months, that situation might not last, and concern was running high in the industry that new legislation on food safety would add costs to the producer. The NPPC called for animal identification legislation to be brought into force swiftly, an extra cost thought worthwhile, presumably.
How the US might be able to cope with an outbreak of foot and mouth disease (FMD) was tested at the start of the World Pork Expo as a group of 80 people representing production agriculture, law enforcement, media and state and federal governments took part in a table-top exercise sponsored by the Pork Checkoff.
With new outbreaks of FMD being reported in a new area of Japan, and the discovery of FMD-postive wild pigs in South Korea, the timing of these preparations at WPX may have been very opportune.

Flaxseed meal is a novel protein source that can be incorporated into pig diets, according to L. Eastwood and Dr D. Beaulieu in the latest Centred on Swine from the Prairie Swine Research Centre. A high-quality extruded product fed at up to 15 per cent for eight weeks had no impact on animal performance but provided ALA-enrichment of the back fat.
