Editorial: EU Pushes for Mandatory Nutritional Labelling

New draft EU legislation adopted by MEPs last week calls for food labels to feature mandatory nutritional information and guideline daily amounts.

MEPs backed the European Commission proposal that quantities of fat, saturates, sugar and salt - as well as energy - must be indicated on the front of food packs.

However, the MEPs rejected a proposal for 'traffic light' values to highlight the salt, sugar and fat content of processed foods.

In Ireland, the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Brendan Smith, announced details of two new on-farm investment schemes designed to improve the standards of animal welfare in sow housing and for poultry production.

The schemes, which are worth a maximum €29 million, are part of a €113 million targeted scheme for on-farm investment to support a number of specific categories of farmers and focused on supporting productive investment and are part of the revised Rural Development Plan 2007-2013.

In the US, the processing giant, Smithfield Foods, announced a net loss for the year of $101 million and improvement of $97 million on the previous year.

At the same time the company announced it was bidding to take full control of the Butterball turkey business in which it had a 49 per cent stake.

The UK pig meat industry has welcomed the Traditional Speciality Guaranteed (TSG) classification of Protected Food Names for Gloucester Old Spots.

The status places Gloucester Old Spots alongside champagne and Parma ham.
