Editorial - EU Pig Meat Output Fell by Six Per Cent in 2009
The latest update for the EU-27 pig population from Eurostat reveals a fall of more than one million or 0.7 per cent from the previous year to an EU-27 total to just under 152 million animals in 2009.
The picture for pig meat production, however, raises more serious concerns. Overall, pig meat production in the EU-27 was just under 21.3 million tonnes last year – a fall of almost six per cent compared to 2008. This somewhat modest average fall masks massive declines in output in some countries, especially the New Member States.
German scientists have found a match in Salmonella enterica sub-strain in pigs, pork and people, indicating that contaminated pork can spread Salmonella from pigs to consumers.
After years of back-and-forth procrastination, the European Commission has this week authorised six genetically modified (GM) varieties of maize for food and feed uses – though not cultivation – in the EU.
And finally, a further step in the concentration of the global animal health sector was taken during the past week as Sanofi-aventis and Merck announced their intention to combine Merial with Intervet/Schering-Plough, creating a new global leader in the sector to be called Merial-Intervet. Approval of the new joint venture by the regulatory authorities is expected early in 2011.

EU Pig Meat Production - 2009
EU - According to Eurostat, pig meat production in the EU-27 was just under 21.3 million tonnes last year – a reduction of almost six per cent compared to 2008. This rather modest average masks massive declines in output in some countries, especially some of the New Member States, writes Jackie Linden, editor of ThePigSite.

Foetal Programming – Can it Impact Pork Production?
The type of housing a female is penned in during gestation may cause foetal programming, according to Ronald O. Bates, state swine specialist at Michigan State University, writing in MSU Quarterly Pork Quarterly. In other words, pregnancy housing type can affect the performance of the sow's subsequent litter.
Philippines - Hog Industry Updates
Pig production increased by more than 1.1 per cent in value terms in 2009 while per-capita pork consumption declined, according to Pia A. Ang in the latest GAIN report from the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service.
One-Dose Vaccination Against Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae and Porcine Circovirus Type 2
There was no immunological interference between the M.hyo and PCV2 antigens of M+PAC, Porcilis M Hyo and Porcilis PCV – independent of whether they are given concurrently as separate single vaccines or combined in a ready-to-use vaccine with either Emunade or XSolve as the adjuvant – reported A. Eggen, U. Schmidt, M. Raes and M. Witvliet at IPVS 2010.

Birthweight Has No Impact on Carcass, Meat Quality
CANADA - Increasing litter size led to a reduction in mean birth weight of the piglets, which did prolong the time needed to reach market weight but had no negative effects on pork quality, according to A.D. Beaulieu and co-authors.
ACMC Tip: Creep Mat Temperature Control is Crucial
UK - Many pig producers have replaced creep lamps with heat mats.
