Editorial - Latest Crop Estimates Bring Some Relief
Following the recent news of a halt in Russian cereal exports and the threat of similar action from other leading grain-exporting countries, there was some slightly better news for pig producers last week.
USDA'S monthly World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates report included forecast yields and crop sizes for maize and soybeans that were higher than the previous month's estimates.
Indeed, USDA is now expecting the largest average national maize yield and largest maize crop in history at 165 bushels per acre and 13.365 billion bushels, respectively. These eclipse last year's records of 164.7 bushels per acre and 13.110 billion bushels. US wheat production is also forecast to be higher than last season, and the report says that southern hemisphere cereal production looks promising.
The forecast for this year's soybean yield (44.0 bushels per acre) matches last year's record while forecast soybean production of 3.433 billion bushels would, like the maize crop, break last year's record or 3.359 billion bushels.
Owing to the growing use of maize for ethanol, the latest news is unlikely to return feed ingredient prices to normal levels but at least, it should not exacerbate an already difficult situation.
And finally, the World Health Organization has announced that influenza H1N1 has entered the so-called 'post-pandemic period'. The new H1N1 virus has largely run its course.
WHO secretary General, Dr Chan did warn, however, that the H1N1 virus might take on the behaviour of a seasonal influenza virus and continue to circulate for some years to come.
