Editorial - Calls for Fewer Trade Restrictions at World Meat Congress

The World Meat Congress took place last week in the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires, and senior editor, Chris Harris, posted regular updates on ThePigSite.

Speaking at the opening of the Congress, outgoing president of the International Meat Secretariat (IMS), Paddy Moore, said that international trade in meat is expected to grow despite occasional setbacks through animal diseases, food safety scares and issues surrounding market access.

Global meat demand is expected to grow by between one and two per cent during the remainder of this decade, he said, and the industry has the prospect of feeding an extra 80 million people each year. Mr Moore expects the pig and poultry industries to out-perform growth in lamb and beef.

Frans Van Dongen from the Dutch meat industry told the Pig Committee of the IMS that the Secretariat should take a more active role in helping to promote free trade and reduce trade barriers.

And finally, the Danes are confident that they will be ready for the European Union partial stalls ban, which takes effect from January 2013. A recent survey has revealed that 70 per cent of Danish producers already keep pregnant sows in group systems.

Canada - Livestock and Products Annual Report 2010
Canada's cattle and hog herds are forecast to stabilise in 2011. Rebuilding may emerge in 2012 based on higher animal prices and a strong demand due to current tight markets.
