Editorial - Battle Against PMWS Receives a Boost

Scientists at the Royal Veterinary College in the UK have developed a severity estimation calculator for post-weaning multi-systemic wasting syndrome (PMWS). The calculator is part of a £11.5 million BBSRC-funded programme to tackle some of the most harmful and widespread endemic diseases that commonly affect farmed animals in the country.

Last week, Statistics Canada released the quarterly hog inventory numbers, which showed the Canadian sow herd was 0.5 per cent smaller on 1 October than on 1 July and 3.7 per cent smaller than on 1 October 2009.

And in Belgium, the latest survey reveals a fall of 4.6 per cent in the number of pig farms over the last year, although with a count of just under 6.4 million, there were 1.2 per cent more pigs in the country than 12 months previously.

In a a trading update for the first nine months of 2010, Russian meat processing giant, Cherkizovo, announced that sales volumes in its pork division increased by an impressive 51 per cent to approximately 53,900 tonnes of live weight over the period, compared to approximately 35,570 tonnes for the first nine months of 2009. This growth was attributed to increased production as Cherkizovo's new farms start to achieve their forecasted target levels of output.

Also last week, Cherkizovo announced the start of construction of a new greenfield pork farm in the Lipetsk region of Central Russia. The new state-of-the-art multi-site complex will house 4,800 sows and will have an estimated full capacity of 12,500 tonnes of liveweight pork per year.
