Editorial - Trade Talks Run into Trouble

The governments of the United States and South Korea have not resolved the issues that had stalled concurrence on the US-Korea Free Trade Agreement (FTA).

In a statement, US Meat Export Federation (USMEF) stated its disappointment that no agreement could be reached between the two countries over beef and pork trade at the talks last week.

Meanwhile, in the EU, the farmers' organisation, Copa-Cogeca, has attacked the EU Commission's move to prioritise completion of the trade liberalising talks with Mercosur, the Latin American Trading Group, in its trade policy agenda for the next five years.

Its Secretary-General explained: "Copa-Cogeca strongly opposes the talks, as any agreement would have a catastrophic impact on the EU agriculture sector. These imports do not have to comply with the same high standards as those in the EU and an agreement would lead to a substantial contraction in the EU agriculture sector, threatening 28 million jobs in EU rural areas."

Australian supermarket chain, Coles, has calmed the fears of local pork producers over reports that the retailer was to impose different welfare rules for its suppliers of fresh and processed, imported and locally sourced pig meat.

Last week, Australian pork farmers welcomed the decision by Coles to apply its 'gestation stall-free fresh pork policy' to include all forms of its branded pork products by 2014.

And finally, there will be a strong editorial presence from ThePigSite at the EuroTier trade show in Hanover, Germany, this week, bringing you all the news and views from the event.
