Editorial - EU to Introduce COOL for Pork

The European Council has agreed new labelling rules for pork that include compulsory country of origin labelling (COOL).

The Council agreed to the introduction of COOL for several types of meat, including pork. This will be welcomed by the pig meat industries in a number of EU Member States, where labelling local products offers the opportunity for a price premium.

In the Netherlands, the meat industry has announced its intention to put into place new measures that will help it meet a target of cutting antibiotic use in meat production by a half. A new report from the Livestock Antibiotic Resistance Steering Group describes how to reduce antibiotic use by 20 per cent from 2009 to 2011. By 2013, usage would be cut by 50 per cent.

On 3 December, representatives from the European Commission and stakeholders from the Member States gathered for a 'Reflection Day' to develop key actions and tools for a sustainable and competitive European pork industry.

Representatives of the European farmers organisations, the meat industry and the feed industry highlighted the case for a comprehensive action plan seeking to move the EU pig sector out of the present crisis situation. They also insisted on the need to take a long-term approach to reinforce the long-term viability of the pig sector enhancing its capacity to supply sustainable, competitive pork to consumers in the EU and on world markets.

They are proposing short-term, mid-term and long-term measures to maintain and develop the EU pork sector's position as a world leader.

Meanwhile, in the US, the latest World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates report has increased the forecasts for US pork output in 2010 and 2011.

In the pig health world, new outbreaks of foot and mouth disease have been reported in South Korea. Russian Federation and Tanzania have each announced one new case of African swine fever and there have also been new outbreaks of classical swine fever in Russia.
