Editorial - Consumers, PR and the Global Pork Industry

The battle to intercept contaminated pork products before they arrive on the dinner tables of China is taking place across the country but some consumers are saying their confidence has been rattled following a recent scandal in which a banned substance was allegedly found in pork sold by a major supplier.

Inspectors from animal husbandry authorities in Taizhou city in Zhejiang province had found 19 urine samples positive for clenbuterol after collection from pigs destined for slaughter at a major meat processing plant last week.

Meanwhile, in Canada, transparency on food safety enforcement is to be increased. Agriculture Minister, Gerry Ritz, announced that the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) will now publish information about its compliance and enforcement activities being taken to protect the safety of the Canadian food, animal and plant supply.

And in the UK, 10 years on from the worst foot and mouth disease (FMD) outbreak in the country's history, scientific experts and industry representatives attended a one-day conference at Moredun Research Institute near Edinburgh last week to discuss the significant role that vaccination could play in any future outbreak of disease. The conference was entitled 'Foot and Mouth – Vaccine to Live'.

Nigel Miller, President of NFU Scotland, said: "The 'Vaccine to Live' event was designed to stimulate sensible discussion on how we can exploit the new diagnostic tools that are available to us, and how we can open the door to a Vaccine to Live policy within Scotland and the UK.

“Fundamentally, we must find a way to avoid the scenes of mass slaughter of 2001. The economic disruption caused by culling livestock from huge areas, and the scars that left on both individuals who were directly affected, and the wider countryside, is not something any of us want to see again. It is our duty as an industry to equip ourselves with the tools to ensure those scenes are not repeated."
