Editorial – EU Farmers' Group Works to Improve Industry Prospects

Farmers' group, Copa-Cogeca, has highlighted the actions taken in the EU recently to improve the drastic state of the pig meat sector, as well as outlining new measures that would improve the longer-term prospects for the industry.

The move came after debates in Copa-Cogeca's Pig Meat Working Party. Chairman of that group, Mr Tavares, said: "In view of the crisis which has been hitting the EU pig meat sector since 2007, Copa-Cogeca has been working hard to ensure measures are introduced to relieve the crisis. Feed costs in particular increased sharply recently which hit producers hard as they account for between 60 and 65 per cent of total production costs and producers have been squeezed by high input costs and low prices.

Mr Tavares highlighted the positive result of the EU Commission's decision to open private storage aid temporarily in February for pig meat, with prices picking up somewhat in the main pig meat-producing countries. He warned, however, that the first meat will come out of storage in May and that measures may be needed to prevent the price sliding downwards again.

He also welcomed the EU's recent agreement to allow imports into the EU of animal feed with traces of unauthorised genetically modified materials up to a limit of 0.1 per cent, which he said will help keep a lid on feed price rises. A reconsideration on the future return to the use of meat and bone meal in non-ruminant diets would help reduce dependence on imported soybean, he added.

China's Agriculture Ministry has vowed to enhance supervision on animal products following the recent pork contamination scandal.

Vice Agricultural Minister, Gao Hongbin, said that it is imperative to crack down on illegal feed additives such as clenbuterol and enhance quality supervision during the process of slaughter, sale, transport and stock in major pig-breeding areas. He also called on producers to modernise pig production and genetics, as well as on local authorities to take precautions against imported animal diseases.

And finally, foot and mouth disease (FMD) has been blamed for the dramatic fall in South Korea's pig production. There were 2.85 million or 28.8 per cent fewer pigs produced in this last quarter than during the fourth quarter of last year.
