Editorial - Times Are Tough for Producers but Global Pork Output Estimate is Raised

The latest statistics from Canada show there were 1.4 per cent fewer hogs on the nation's farms on 1 April this year than on the same date in 2010, while the sow inventory was more–or–less unchanged.

Canadian hog exports totalled 1.4 million in the first quarter of 2011, down 3.6 per cent from the same period last year. During the first quarter of 2011, approximately 5.5 million hogs were slaughtered in Canada, a decline of 2.8 per cent from a year earlier.

Combined pig inventories were released last week for the US and Canada. There are 27,000 more breeding animals and about 500,000 more market hogs year-over-year or about 20,000 more market hogs a week. There is next to no change, according to Jim Long in his Pork Commentary. The statistics indicate productivity gains, not expansion. With an ever-increasing continental population and strong pork export demand, he expects to see lean hog prices to be around $1.00 lean per pound for the summer of 2011 and have strong prices for a further year.

The average producer of finishing pigs in the UK, however, is losing around UK£18 (US$30) per pig sent to market. Little recovery in profits are expected soon with cost of production estimated at UK£1.60 (US$2.66) per kilogram carcass weight.

High feed prices are forecast to continue to challenge global hog producers, yet the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service now expects global pork output in 2011 to be 52.5 million metric tonnes (MMT), up from its October 2010 estimate of 51.5MMT.

Efficiency gains in China and higher slaughter weights in the EU are expected to more than offset the foot and mouth disease-related drop in South Korea. World trade is being driven by strong demand from South Korea, China and the Ukraine.
