Editorial - Reformed CAP Will Address Industry Concerns, Says EC

The European Commission (EC) briefed the Agriculture and Fisheries Council on the conclusions of the enlarged advisory group on pig meat at the Council's meeting in Brussels last week.

Several delegations supported the main conclusions made by the enlarged advisory group on pig meat establishing the role of innovation in the competitiveness of this sector and the importance of a better integration of the pig industry. The Commission expects to consider a large number of measures for this sector in the context of the future CAP, including putting in place a mechanism to better anticipate crises, reinforcing promotion in the EU and outside the EU and seeking a better balance in the power of producers in this sector.

The current market tools available have shown their efficiency and should be kept but possibly improved, it was reported. However, some member states commented that the conclusions of the enlarged advisory group did not provide sufficient concrete replies to the causes of the crisis in this sector.

So it appears that the pig sector in Europe will not receive any help from Brussels with its specific problems any time soon.

This year's European Pig Producers (EPP) Congress was held last week in Münster in north-west Germany with the theme, 'Germany: Turntable for European Pork'. The meeting was booked out, with almost 300 participants, especially from the host country and neighbouring the Netherlands. There will be reports on the meeting on ThePigSite in the coming weeks.

Turning to the US, pork production in April totalled 1.79 billion pounds, down three per cent from April 2010, while the number of hogs slaughter was down five per cent at 8.63 million. The average live weight four pounds higher than the previous year at 277 pounds. For the first four months of 2011, pork production was up one per cent from last year.

And finally, reports of foot and mouth disease (FMD) have been published in Taiwan (on a pig farm) and in Israel (cattle and sheep).

As next Monday is a public holiday in the UK, the next newsletter from ThePigSite will be mailed to you on Tuesday 31 May.
