Towards More Sustainable Pig Feeding

Some significant steps in improving sustainability in the feed industry were in the news last week.

The first global guidelines on sustainability for the feed industry were published last week week

The International Feed Industry Federation (IFIF) has released for public consultation the Global Feed Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) guidelines developed by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)-led Livestock Environmental Assessment and Performance Partnership (LEAP) are now available for public review.

The American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) and the European Compound Feed Manufacturers’ Federation (FEFAC) jointly developed the Feed LCA recommendations and they form a significant part of the draft guidelines.

In less than two years, IFIF says, the methodology has been developed to introduce a harmonised, science-based, practical and international approach to the assessment of the environmental performance of feed supply chains, while taking into account the specificity of the diverse production systems that exist globally.

In a separate initiative, FEFAC has issued an update on its 'roadmap' for sourcing soybeans responsibly, showing where progress has been made and where more needs to be done.

The roadmap contains the key issues for the EU feed industry linked with the supply of responsible soy to Europe, as well as a project plan for the setting up of an independent benchmark systems of existing certification schemes against the set of the Federation's minimum import criteria, for which it will launch a tender procedure and cooperate with IDH (the sustainable trade initiative).

Fostering mainstream market solutions for the supply of responsibly produced soybean products to EU feed markets is the main objective, given that none of the currently available certification schemes has yet achieved 'critical mass'.

Feed grain imports can significantly improve the efficiency of the pork value chain in China, says Rabobank. Combining technology from the Netherlands and the US would save China more than 174,000 tonnes of nitrogen fertiliser inputs, 11 million tonnes of corn and nearly 1.75 million hectares of land greatly limiting environmental damage, according to its latest report.

Saturday 22 March was World Water Day. Water and agriculture are inextricably interlinked and interdependent. Agriculture is a major user of both ground and surface water for irrigation, accounting for about 70 per cent of water withdrawal worldwide.

Turning to news of African Swine Fever, (ASF) the European Food Safety Authority has found hunting and artificial feeding unlikely to be effective to control the disease in wild boar in Europe and recommends a feasibility study on fencing. It appears that ASF has been beaten in Benin and Poland has not reported any new cases for a month.

For Porcine Epidemic Diarrhoea (PED), 4,757 farms in 27 states of the US have tested positive for the virus, as have 37 Canadian farms. There are also reports of PED in Japan and Colombia.

An emerging porcine pathogen, Swine DeltaCoronaVirus (SDCV), first identified in North America on a pig farm in Ohio last month, has now been found on several farms in Ontario, Canada. It is related to the more familiar coronaviruses causing Transmissible Gastroenteritis (TGE) and PED and also causes diarrhoea in pigs but poses no threat to people.

This Week's Articles and Analysis

Amino Acid Digestibility in Soybean Products, Rapeseed Expellers and a Fermented Mixture of Co-products for Weaner Pigs
A study at the Hans H Stein Monogastric Nutrition Laboratory at the University of Illinois shows similar digestibility of crude protein and amino acids for all processed soy products tested and these were generally higher than for the rapeseed products tested. A fermented mixed product based on rapeseed had the lowest digestible amino acid content.

Effects of Corn Particle Size and Diet Form on Finishing Pig Growth Performance and Carcass Characteristics
At the 2013 Kansas Swine Day, University researchers reported a study showing that finishing pigs performed better on the pelleted diet than meal, as expected, but there was no advantage in fine-grinding the corn in pelleted diets. Carcass parameters were not affected by dietary treatment.

Gait Analysis as an Objective Tool to Measure Hoof Lameness Phases in Multiparous Sows
A study at Iowa State University Research has found that a pressure mat gait analysis walkway system has potential for sow lameness detection.

Ad libitum Feeding During the Peripartal Period Affects Body Condition, Reproduction and Metabolism of Sows
Ad-lib feeding sows in poor or moderate body condition around farrowing had beneficial effects on sow backfat and piglet performance to weaning, according to a new study from Belgium.

Growth Performance of Heavy Pigs Fed Diets Decreasing Crude Protein and Indispensable Amino Acids
Heavy pigs reared for dry cured ham can be fed diets with reduced levels of crude protein and essential amino acids, without any detrimental effects on performance, according to recently published work in Padua, Italy.

Foaming Manure in Hog Barns: Explosion, Fire and Asphyxiation Hazard
Ontario's agriculture ministry explains the causes of foaming pig manure and warns farm staff of the potential dangers.

Spillover of pH1N1 to Swine in Cameroon: Investigation of Risk Factors
Following a study of the transmission of the porcine influenza virus of the H1N1 sub-type in Cameroon, US-based researchers concluded that allowing domestic pigs to roam freely is a significant risk factor for the spill-over of the virus from people to pigs.

Effect of Cross-fostering and Oral Supplementation with Colostrum on Performance of
