UK Pig Industry Shows Cautious Optimism

Levels of profitability in the British pig sector have been good for most of the last year.

Mick Sloyan, Director of the British Pig Executive (BPEX), offered his views of the industry at the British Pig and Poultry Fair last week.

At the previous event – two years ago – the UK industry was struggling to cover its cost of production.

“How the situation has changed!” said Mr Sloyan. In the last year, margins have been maintained and even improved with pig prices rising and feed costs have fallen over the last year. Producers have taken the opportunity to invest, making their businesses more profitable for the future and UK pig meat exports have risen substantially, particularly to Asia.

The disease risks should not be under-estimated, Mr Sloyan stressed, as the EU is 'squeezed' between African Swine Fever to its east and Porcine Epidemic Diarrhoea across the Atlantic. BPEX is among the stakeholders working on a plan to address the risks in the UK.

Also at the Fair, BPEX launched a new strategy - 'Going for Growth’ - which sets out its strategic priorities for the next five years, covering welfare, environmental impacts, production efficiency, traceability and marketing.

On Porcine Epidemic Diarrhoea, the latest report from the US indicates that the total number of farm samples that have tested positive for the PED virus now stands at 6,461, with 30 states thought to be affected, according to the most recent report.

Canada is continuing to fight the PED virus using enhanced biosecurity.

A similar virus, Porcine Delta Corona virus (PDCoV) has now been detected on a total of 142 pig farms in 14 US states.

As next Monday is a public holiday in the UK, the next weekly newsletter from ThePigSite will be sent out on Tuesday 27 May.
