Standing Up for Animal Welfare

Global food processing giant Nestlé has launched a new set of guidelines for animal welfare for its producers.

The guidelines that were drawn up with guidance from World Animal Protection, together with in-put from Mercy for Animals and the Humane Society of the United States, are based on the international five freedoms for animal welfare.

The five Freedoms are:

  1. Freedom from hunger, thirst and malnutrition
  2. Freedom from fear and distress
  3. Freedom from physical and thermal discomfort
  4. Freedom from pain, injury and disease
  5. Freedom to express normal patterns of behaviour

The Commitment on Farm Animal Welfare has been added to Nestlé’s supplier guide and it spells out the company’s commitment to improving animal welfare across its global supply chains.

In the guidelines on the supplier code Nestlé says: “We share consumer, civil society organisation, government and investor concerns about the care, health and welfare of farm animals used in food production”.

The company adds that it also recognises the link between animal welfare and the health of animals raised for food.

And it says it believes that “robust farm animal health and welfare standards can have both a direct and an indirect impact on food quality and safety”.

In Australia, the RSPCA has called for states and territories to legislate mandatory reporting of animal cruelty.
The RSPCA wants the government to make it illegal for anyone working with animals, including farmers, saleyard operators and vets, not to report incidents of animal abuse.

“It should not have to take someone with a camera to raise the alarm when there are already eye-witnesses to the events being filmed,” said Heather Neil, RSPCA Australia CEO.
“The RSPCA believes that anyone witnessing animal cruelty has a moral obligation to report it to the relevant authorities.
“But there are some people who, by the nature of their role, are expected to know what animal cruelty is and when action should be taken.
“These people should have a legal obligation to report cruelty when they see it,” said Ms Neil.
Chief executive of Australian Pork Limited, Andrew Spencer, said it could prevent activists from withholding footage of animal cruelty for long periods of time.

In the global situation on Porcine Epidemic Diarrhoea Virus, new research points to the possibility that the virus could be transmitted through the air.

The study found that infectious PEDV was detected in the air 10 miles downwind from infected farms.

In the research published by Veterinary Research, Alonso, DP Goede, RB Morrison, PR Davies, A Rovira, DG Marthaler, and M Torremorell, assessed whether PEDV could become airborne and if so, whether the virus was infectious.

Meanwhile, there have been 34 new outbreaks of Porcine Epidemic Diarrhoea (PED) reported on farms in Chinese Taipei.
