Action on Animal Welfare by Global Food Firms

Major meat and food processing companies around the world are now taking a lead in animal welfare issues. No longer are the ethical aspects of food production receiving a small mention hidden somewhere in the company's sustainability report.

Nestlé and Unilever laid out welfare codes of practice for their supply chain last week. For Nestlé, the guidelines were drawn up based on the 'Five Freedoms' while Unilever has moved to end the culling of day-old male chicks by its egg supply chain.

These commitments to improving animal welfare indicate not only that global multinationals are starting to appreciate the connection between animal welfare, health and food quality but are now also taking action on their customers demands.

Both companies in drawing up their welfare guidelines have drawn on the expertise from several animal welfare groups – once considered to be the bane of the meat processor.

Global food processing giant, Heinz, has also announced it is to strengthen animal welfare practices for its supply chain.

Market forecasting prices is never an easy business and the US hog market, which has been in the news a lot this year, is no exception. Market analyst, John Strak, explains that it is too soon to see recent market changes as setting a new pattern for the future.

A new European Union Agriculture Commissioner has been appointed: Phil Hogan of Ireland.

Top of Mr Hogan's priorities are the simplification of the greening and direct payment aspects of the Common Agricultural Policy.

Also in the EU, new proposals have been put forward that will make veterinary medicines more available in the Community to treat and prevent diseases in animals.

And finally, turning to news of pig health, new cases of African swine fever have been reported in Russia, Estonia and Latvia in the last week. Latvia has also reported three outbreaks of classical swine fever.

Uganda and South Korea have been hit by Foot and Mouth disease outbreaks.

And while mild weather is helping to keep porcine epidemic diarrhoea under control in the US, farmers in Taiwan have been warned to be on the alert for the disease as the autumn approaches.
