African Swine Fever Detected in Latvian Backyard Pigs

African Swine Fever (ASF) is continuing to spread through Latvia with reports this week of the disease hitting a backyard pig operation.

Eleven domestic pigs tested positive for ASF at the holding in Dubnas parish and all 18 pigs were destroyed to prevent the spread of the disease.

The OIE noted that the backyard holding is located within the restricted area, established in response to ASF outbreaks.

As well as the outbreak in domestic pigs, ASF was also confirmed in 32 wild boars from sites across the country.

ASF has also been reported this week in wild boars in Estonia and on a pig farm in Cape Verde. Here, the outbreak led to the death of 20 pigs out of the 217 susceptible.

In other news, a survey done by researchers from the University of Cambridge has found the MRSA 'superbug' in sausages and minced pork obtained from UK supermarkets.

A total of 103 (52 pork and 51 chicken) pre-packaged fresh meat products, labelled as being of UK farm origin, from supermarkets in five different locations across in England were sampled.

All of the meat products were frozen at -20°C. After thawing, researchers disinfected the exterior packaging before removing the meat.

They then tested a 10g sample of meat from each packet and screened for MRSA. Two of the pork samples - one from sausages, one from minced pork - tested positive for MRSA; the sausage sample contained two strains of the bacteria.

Despite the findings, the researchers stressed that this does not pose a significant immediate risk to the public.

PRRS with Special Reference to Clinical Aspects and Diagnosis
Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS) emerged as a disease with clear symptoms, including reproductive problems in sows, high mortality of neonatal piglets as well as respiratory disease and mortality in piglets but it has since been linked to a wide range of clinical signs.

Are Sows Leaving the Herd Too Early?
In sow facilities, longevity is key. The longer a sow stays in the herd, the more potential she has to reach – and exceed – her breakeven point. New research shows many sows are leaving the US sow herd at a young age – a problem potentially linked to low feed intake in lactation.
