African Swine Fever Reaches Moldova

Moldova has now confirmed its first outbreaks of African Swine Fever (ASF). The outbreaks were reported on two backyard pig farms in Donduseni.

These farms are located in northern Moldova, close to the border with Ukraine.

Of the 13 pigs susceptible, 11 cases were reported. The outbreaks are thought to have been caused by swill feeding.

Following the earlier suspicion of the outbreak, the Romanian National Newspaper reported that Romania would ban imports of animal products from Moldova and Ukraine in order to prevent the spread of ASF into the country.

New ASF outbreaks were also confirmed this week on pig farms in Poland and South Africa.

In other disease news, Senecavirus A has been confirmed in Ontario, Canada. The finding came after US authorities turned away at least eight truckloads of pigs which apparently showed signs of the disease (formerly called Seneca Valley Virus).

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is now testing all swine at federal processing plants that are symptomatic.

Also in the news this week, the AHDB reported that, as expected, Russia has appealed against the World Trade Organisation’s (WTO) judgement that its ban on imports of EU pig meat products was against WTO rules.

Appeals can take up to three months to complete. If the original judgement is upheld, Russia will have to remove the ban within a ‘reasonable period of time’ or face retaliatory measures.

Hens, Hooves, Woollies and Wellies: The Diary of a Farmer's Wife

Hens, Hooves, Woollies and Wellies: The Diary of a Farmer's Wife

Behind every good farmer is a great farmer’s wife though the farmer in question may not always appreciate this! Having been married to John for over 30 years, Bobbi Mothersdale knows this more than anyone. Through her diary, Bobbi gives a wry, comical and yet realistic account of life on their East Yorkshire farm. Over the course of the year, we meet her friends and family as well as the three dogs, numerous hens and crafty guinea fowl that play such a big part in their daily routine. Like any farming family they have good days mixed with bad and have to deal with adverse weather, bureaucratic challenges and uncooperative livestock. Bobbi’s accounts of her irate farming husband thwarted once again by the gods of rain or a petulant sheep will be instantly recognisable to anyone who has ever worked on a farm and on many an occasion you will find yourself laughing out loud at her description of the situations she finds herself in. Illustrated with 24 beautiful sketches by Jacquie Sinclair, Bobbi’s dry and witty way with words can not fail to amuse and endear you. If you are a farmer’s wife, you will find this an unputdownable must-read that you will want to share with all your friends. Though be warned - you might need to prise it away from your husband and his friends first…

Comparing Methods for Preventing PED Virus in Feed
Infection with porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) causes diarrhea, vomiting, and high mortality in suckling pigs. Contaminated feed has been suggested as a vehicle of transmission for PEDV. The objective of this study was to compare thermal and electron beam processing, and the inclusion of feed additives on the inactivation of PEDV in feed, writes Michaela P. Trudeau et al. University of Minnesota.
