China catapulted into chaos as 15th ASF case identified

Over the past 6 weeks (3 August to 10 September), 15 ASF cases have been confirmed in China, covering six provinces in sequence: Liaoning, Henan, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui and Heilongjiang. In total, 897 pigs died, 2,785 pigs were infected and nearly 40,000 pigs were slaughtered in the infected areas.

Among these six provinces, Liaoning and Heilongjiang in the Northeast and Henan in Central China, are primary pork producing regions. Pigs from these regions are regularly transported to other provinces – Anhui in East China contributed 4.1 percent of China’s total pork production in 2017, some of which were also exported to neighbouring provinces. Jiangsu and Zhejiang, also located in East China, purchase many pigs from other provinces to support their provincial pork consumption demand. In all, the amount of live pigs sold by these six provinces reached 174,175,000, occupying 25.3 percent of the nationally sold live pigs in 2017.

Multi-national study shows health and safety is top priority for pork consumers

A choice experiment investigated the role of production characteristics in consumer choice of pork. Results indicate possibilities for product positioning based on health and safety

The study was conducted by researchers from both Denmark and Germany and concerned the consumer behaviour of candidates from Poland and Germany in 2015. An online survey was completed by 1,995 candidates who were asked to rank their primary concerns for the way in which meat was produced.

Results indicated that in both Germany and Poland, there is a significant proportion of consumers that find production characteristics important when selecting meat products, with the majority of consumers selecting health and safety as their main concern.

Farrowing fun makes for contented sows

A Pork CRC research project investigating sow contentment has yielded hugely positive results in reducing still births and enhancing affective state in older sows

Innovative research in Pork CRC Project 1A-111 by scientists from University of Melbourne, Rivalea Australia, SARDI and Sun Pork Farms into the contentment or affective state of sows housed in traditional farrowing systems suggested that providing enrichment as straw or lucerne hay two days before farrowing might enhance the affective state of older sows and certainly reduce still birth rate.

The studies were some of the first to explore the contentment/affective state of sows housed in traditional farrowing systems.
