The many ways that ASF is threatening the global pig industry

With the latest outbreaks reported on Friday and Monday (14 and 17 September), China officially has 22 confirmed cases of African swine fever (ASF). And while China mostly produces pork for the domestic market, the outbreaks could wreak havoc on global markets.

Melanie Epp speaks to experts in the US about the potential impact of this disease on the global market. According to the experts, the issue is not about China as an exporter – China is a small exporter of pork. The primary issue is the impact on Chinese production, and therefore, demand.

Recent findings indicating the virus’s capacity to survive in feed ingredients and shipping containers has also provided a new source of concern for both infected and non-infected regions.

£3m support scheme launched to reduce air pollution from farming

Farming is responsible for 88 percent of all UK emissions of ammonia gas which can travel long distances, be damaging to the environment, and combine with other pollutants to form particulates, which are harmful to human health.

The Catchment Sensitive Farming (CSF) partnership has just launched a new £3 million programme to reduce farming emissions. The partnership between Defra, the Environment Agency and Natural England will support farmers to take action to reduce harmful ammonia emissions.

Pig pest reaches the West: African swine fever confirmed in Belgium

European authorities are on high alert and emergency measures implemented as African swine fever (ASF) has been identified in wild boar in the Belgian province of Luxembourg.

The Belgian food safety agency, FASFC, has confirmed that two wild boars were found to be carrying the disease close to Étalle, a village in Luxembourg.
