Porcine Epidemic Diarrhoea (PED)

See chapter 8 for further information.

(281) This is caused by a corona virus which affects all ages of pigs. When it is first introduced into the breeding herd the clinical picture in the dry sow area can vary considerably from very mild "cow pat' type faeces through to a watery diarrhoea. Sows normally recover over a period of about a week, usually without after affects. The virus is widespread throughout Europe and as a result it is uncommon to see disease in the breeding side of the herd due to the strong immunity that develops. The disease is much more important in the sucking pig.
