Tail Biting

See chapter 9; Vice for further information.

(483) Trauma to the tail and the skin is common under all conditions of management both indoors and outdoors. It is more common however in intensive conditions particularly where pigs are housed on slatted floors or solid ones without bedding.

Fig.10-24 shows a typical case, probably 2-3 days old , with considerable infection around the stump. Infection may progress into the spine or be disseminated throughout the pig causing multiple abscesses.

TAIL BITING
Note the swelling and infection around the tail.
