The Pig Journal has three sections, one for Refereed articles, one for the Proceedings of the Pig Veterinary Society and one section for review papers and articles and information which are considered to be of interest to the Society.
Refereed Section The Pig Journal will consider original papers, short communications and review articles in the field of veterinary and allied sciences relating to the pig. The Proceedings section will consist of papers presented at meetings of the Society and the General section may contain other contributions which the Editors might wish to include from time to time. Acceptance is subject to the Editor's approval and on the understanding that papers have not been published already, or are not being considered for publication elsewhere.
The notes below indicate the basic requirements for manuscripts. If observed they will simplify sub-editing and accelerate publication.
Proceedings Section The Proceedings Section consists of papers presented at meetings of the Society and the General section may contain other contributions which the Editors might wish to include from time to time. Acceptance is subject to the Editor's approval and on the understanding that papers have not been published already, or are not being considered for publication elsewhere.
The notes below indicate the basic requirements for manuscripts.
Notes for Contributors Manuscripts: For both sections, two copies of each paper, typewritten and in English, double-spaced and printed on one side of A4 paper, with wide margins to allow for alterations and the pages numbered consecutively, should be submitted via the Chairman of the Publications sub-committee, D.G.S. Burch, The Pig Journal, Southview, East Tytherton, Chippenham, Wiltshire SN15 4LX, UK. For the Proceedings section, manuscripts should not exceed 3,000 words and only essential references should be used. For the Refereed section papers may need to be more comprehensive, depending on the subject matter. Papers presented on disk should be on a Word for Windows word-processing program. The Editors reserve the right to reject manuscripts, require amendments, re-arrangement or reduction in length.
Format: The Title Page should give the title of the paper in full, followed by the name(s) and address(es) of the author(s). There should be a Summary of not more than 200 words, complete in itself and understandable without reference to the paper. An Introduction should be followed by Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, with conclusions where appropriate, Acknowledgements and a List of References. This format need not be adhered to for reviews or short communications.
Tables: For the Refereed section, these should be typed on separate sheets, in black and white. A brief title should be typed above each table and footnotes should be indicated by *, + etc. and typed below each table.
Illustrations: Referred to as figures (Fig(s).) should be submitted larger than the size desired for reproduction. The top of the Fig. should be indicated on the back by an arrow. Captions for and explanations of all Fig(s). will be printed below the illustration. Tables and Figures (in black and white) should be kept to a minimum. Photographs should be not less than 150 x 100 cm, and authors will be charged for publication of colour photographs. Offprints may be purchased if ordered and paid for in advance of publication.
References: Exhaustive lists of references should be avoided, with the exception of lists in review articles. References should be quoted in the text as follows: "according to Hodder and Pass (1993) showed ......." or "Recent research into this disease showed that pigs could not be affected (Hodder and Pass 1993)." References to papers with three or more authors should be quoted as "Hodder et al (1993) ...." from the outset. When reference is made to more than one paper by the same author(s) in any one year, the paper should be identified by (1993a or b) etc. Titles of articles are not required; Journal titles should be given in full, followed by the volume number and first and last page numbers: e.g.:-

Book: Duncan, I.J.H. and Fraser, D. (1997). Chapter in Animal Welfare. Eds. Appleby, M.C. and Hughes, B.O., CAB International, Wallingford, Oxon. pp. 19-31.

Conference: Gram, T., Jacobsen, M.J., Ahrens, P. and Nielsen, J.P. (1996). Proceedings 14th International Pig Veterinary Society Congress, Bologna, Italy, p. 186.
Numbers: Numbers 1-9 should be written in words, unless preceding a unit of measurement. Numbers 10 and above should be in numerals unless at the opening of a sentence. Per cent should be used in the text, but when in parenthesis or in a Table, % should be used. Temperatures should be in °C.
Copyright: The copyright of each paper published becomes the property of The Pig Journal, and permission must be sought for re-publication, in whole or in part, except for the Summary.
In order to expedite publication of the Journal, articles for publication in the Proceedings section should be submitted prior to or at meetings of the Society. The payment of honoraria is scaled to encourage this.
