The book is the record of the eighth biennial conference of the Australasian Pig Science Association held on 25-28th November 2001. The major topics are a review of productive research environments in section one, followed by growth, body conformation, environment, management and behaviour in sections 2-5, with two major review papers on factors limiting the performance of growing pigs and the management of piggery odours. Meat quality, body composition and meat hygiene are covered in the next section, followed by animal health and genetics, with an excellent review of the prevalence and eradication of pig diseases in Australia by Ross Cutler, the past president of the last IPVS.
Reproduction and nutrition, nutritive values of feedstuffs and enzymes and nutrition and nutrient utilization make up the next 3 sections and, finally, physiology and immunology are represented by a review paper on luminal bacteria and regulation of gut function and immunity by Kelly and King of the Rowett Research Institute, Aberdeen.
The book is very wide ranging, covering a broad number of topics on pig production. It highlights the extensive interests of many researchers in Australia, demonstrated by the large number of one-page summary papers, full of interesting details.
Copies of the book and earlier proceedings are available address above. Payment may be made by credit card (VISA or Mastercard) or by bank cheque drawn on an Australian Retail Bank, payable in A$ to: P.D Cranwell.
