Econor^® premix (valnemulin - Novartis Animal Health) has now been approved by the European Commission for the following indications: -

• "Treatment of clinical signs of porcine proliferative enteropathy (ileitis)" caused by Lawsonia intracellularis
   
  and
   
  
• "Prevention of clinical signs of porcine colonic spirochaetosis (colitis)" caused by Brachyspira pilosicoli

These indications will be added to the currently approved indications for the treatment and prevention of swine dysentery caused by Brachyspira hyodysenteriae.

This is the first time a product has been approved for all three indications of ileitis, colitis and swine dysentery, three major diseases associated with complicated, profit-damaging diarrhoeas in growing pigs. It is a major development for pig disease control. In a recent survey of farms with grower diarrhoeas, these organisms were found to be responsible on 79% of units investigated.
