Efficacy of Ketoprofen in the Reduction of Pre-weaning Piglet Mortality Associated with Sub-clinical Forms of Post-partum Dysgalactia Syndrome in Sows

Abstract
The efficacy of ketoprofen in reducing pre-weaning piglet mortality was evaluated on a commercial farm with historical records of around 10% mortality attributed to sub-clinical forms of Post-partum Dysgalactia Syndrome (PPDS). Thirty four apparently healthy pre-farrowing sows were placed in two treatment groups. All sows received preventive antimicrobial therapy (amoxicillin 15mg/kg/day, IM) for two consecutive days after farrowing. Animals in the control group did not receive any other treatment, whereas animals in the active therapy group also received an intra-muscular injection of ketoprofen 3mg/kg within 12 hours of farrowing. Pre-weaning mortality was significantly lower in the group treated with ketoprofen and amoxicillin (4.1%vs. 11.0%; P= 0.016). In addition, statistically significant differences were observed in themean number of weaned piglets per litter (11.1 vs. 10.1; P=0.004).No statistically significant differences were observed between groups in terms of daily weight gain. The results obtained reinforce the important role of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in the prevention of PPDS and specifically demonstrate that the administration of ketoprofen to sows early after farrowing, as an add-on treatment to systemic preventive antimicrobial therapy, is efficacious in reducing pre-weaning piglet mortality on farms with no evident clinical signs of disease.
