DISEASE SURVEILLANCE WHAT DO BREEDING COMPANIES REQUIRE?
R.A. Potter

Abstract
Genetic improvement made by the Breeding Companies needs to be protected, if all its benefits are to be realised. This puts extra emphasis on disease prevention and, in turn, the necessity for high standards of biosecurity throughout the whole of the livestock industry. The author re-examines the basics of such control systems and draws on the failures, which occurred with regard to the spread of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) and, prior to that, with the re-emergence of Sheep Scab, to illustrate his points.
