Immunological longitudinal PMWS cohort study.

This study aimed at determining whether there was a link between maternal antibodies to PCV2 and the susceptibility of piglets to PMWS. Five sows, about to farrow, from a Northern Ireland pig herd farm, affected by PMWS, were selected for this 3-month immunological longitudinal study. Whole blood samples were collected from sows before and after the study. The piglets were tagged and sampled (week 1 and at 7 different dates then). The serum was tested with the immunoperoxidase monolayer assay (IPMA). Piglets affected by severe PMWS or that had died were necropsied and tissues selected for analysis. They were immunostained for PCV2 antigens using a monclonal antibody and an indirect immunofluorescence (IIF) protocol. The results showed that maternal antibodies could be active in protecting piglets from PMWS.
