The number of cattle slaughtered in October 2012 was 1.8% higher than in October 2011.

A further comparison of October 2012 and October 2011 slaughtering figures also shows that

  • Sheep slaughterings increased by 33.8%.
  • Pig slaughterings increased by 8.6%.

The number of cattle slaughtered in January-October 2012 was 11.4% lower than the corresponding 2011 period. Over the same period there was an increase of 10.4% in sheep slaughterings and an increase of 4.3% in pig slaughterings.

Comparing EU figures for the periods January-August 2012 and January-August 2011, Ireland showed a 7.5% increase in sheep slaughterings while of the major EU sheep producing countries, Spain, Greece, the United Kingdom and France recorded decreases of 6.8%, 6.4%, 5.1% and 4.0% respectively.
