Pig numbers were up 1.4 per cent in June 2012.

The total number of pigs in Ireland in June 2012 was estimated at 1,570,600. This represents an increase of 1.4% since June 2011. See Table 1

The number of breeding pigs decreased by 6.7% while non-breeding pig numbers increased by 2.3% in the same period. See Table 1.

A comparison of the June 2011 and June 2012 figures (see Table 1) shows that in the breeding category the number of:

  • Other Sows for breeding decreased by 18.9%.
  • Sows in pig decreased by 6.6%.

EU pig population figures showed a decrease of 1.7% in December 2010 compared to December 2011.
