Hog inventories continued their rebound, increasing 1.5% from July 1, 2011 to 12.9 million. This followed a 1.3% increase in the previous year, which in turn followed five years of declines. As of July 1, hog inventories had risen in three consecutive quarters.

As of July 1, 2012, Canadian hog producers had nearly 12.9 million hogs on their farms, up from 12.7 million hogs on the same date in 2011. All provinces and regions reported gains in inventory levels with the highest relative gain for the Atlantic region (8.3%) followed by Saskatchewan (5.8%).

Farmers reported 1.2 million sows and gilts on farms on July 1, 2012, a 1.1% increase from the same date a year earlier and 0.7% below the level on July 1, 2010. Hog farmers anticipate that the number of sows to farrow in Canada during the third and fourth quarters of in 2012 will decrease 1.4% and 1.3%, respectively, compared to the same periods in 2011.

During the second quarter of 2012, domestic hog slaughter totalled 5.1 million head, a 1.1% increase from the second quarter of 2011, but 0.2% below the level for the same period in 2010. Canadian hog slaughter peaked in the fourth quarter of 2004 at just over 6.0 million head.

Total hog exports reached 1.6 million head, up 8.3% from the second quarter of 2011. Exports were still 34.7% below the second-quarter peak of 2.4 million in 2007.

As of July 1, 2012, an estimated 7,200 Canadian farms reported hogs, down 1.8% on a year-over-year basis. The average number of hogs per operation increased from 1,731 to 1,788 during the same period.
