British Pig Executive Weekly Export Bulletin

Today, Hofex closed its doors. Some 40,000 visitors attended the event and a record 61 British food exporters exhibited at the fair, which, incidentally, is the largest ever UK mission of any kind to Hong Kong. These included 17 red meat companies present on the ‘Great’ British Meat branded stand. Two exporters also attended the fair. The large contingent included pork exporters, traders and further processors including some ‘niche’ producers. Among the highlights of the show was the reception at the fair addressed by Consul General Caroline Wilson and Director General for Trade at the Foreign Office, Barbara Woodward. Meanwhile, in Shanghai, six British exporters attended SIAL Shanghai, the largest Chinese food show. Despite the competition of Hofex, with both shows taking place during the same week, SIAL was very busy. In total, an astonishing 25 red meat exporters from the UK were present in Greater China this week (accounting for two companies attending both shows and the presence of two Scottish exporters unlinked to the British Meat presence). It is of course too early to judge the commercial return for individual exporters but all report brisk trade and a high level of interest.

In Hong Kong we met with the Department of Food, Animal Inspection and Control of Macau who confirmed that the local market is open to British pork, although we do not have certificate in place.

China was rocked by a new major scandal this week. See report below.

France

The “Jambon-beurre”

The traditional French sandwich “jambon-beurre” (cooked ham baguette) sold at bars and French café-restaurants, remains the best selling sandwich in France, representing 62% of the total sandwich market (€7 billion). The average price of the jambon-beurre remains attractive at €2.68 (+1.51% in 2012) compared with an average of €3.34 across the total sandwich market. The price of the jambon-beurre varies from €3.26 in Paris to €2.20 in St Brieuc (Brittany). Sales of jambon-beurre are decreasing in bars and restaurants but are increasing in supermarkets and vending machines.

Pork Consumers

The profile of French consumers of fresh pig meat and charcuterie products has been analysed by IFIP across France. High income consumers only buy fresh pork 10.1 times per year compared with 12.3 times for lower income categories. For fresh pork, the penetration rate in the north of France is higher at 90.8% compared with the Paris region at 79.6%. Older couples eat more pig meat, with a penetration of 97.1% whereas, young single consumers eat much less pork with 67% penetration. Charcuterie is much more popular with all consumer categories, with a penetration rate above 99% in all regions. There are cultural differences between regions; more cooked ham is consumed in both the North and West of France, whereas dry ham is preferred in the south.

Markets

Pigs: The basic price in Germany is moving downwards, supplies are higher than anticipated and the price eased accordingly, falling by €0.04 last week. Prices in Denmark and the Netherlands are also decreasing. Spain followed the downward European trend with the price decreasing by €0.027. The European market remains quiet with limited export demand combined with slow home consumption.

Piglets: High production costs, a quiet market for charcutiers pigs combined with price decreases across Europe resulted in a subdued French piglet market last week.

Denmark

Piglet Exports

Low pig prices in Germany have put pressure on Danish exports of piglets according to one of the largest sellers of piglets in Denmark, SPF Danmark at Vejen. SPF Danmark does not state the exact impact this will have on the piglet prices in Denmark but the situation is applying some downward pressure on prices. Danish piglet producers are supported by current demand from Poland; increasing numbers of pigs are being exported to Poland each week. (Source, Landbrugsavisen)

Markets

There is some downward pressure on prices across European markets due, mainly, to lower German quotes. Demand remains weak, in particular for fore-end cuts, shoulders and bellies. Legs and loins are sold at similar prices on a sluggish market. On third country markets, exports to China are weak while demand from Russia and Japan remains unchanged.

Aldi Celebrates it’s Hundredth Birthday

The German retailer was established in Essen in 1913 and opened its first subsidiary in 1948. It has expanded to 3,700 stores in Germany alone with offshoots in USA, Australia, the UK, Slovenia, Ireland, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, Belgium and Luxembourg. Record Exports

In 2012, exports of processed pork increased by 13.8% to €654m representing 98,000 tonnes. France, Germany and the UK represent 54% of the total value of exports. Third country exports progressed well: Australia (+49,2%), Japan (+46%), Brazil (+37%) and Mexico (+12,9%). (Source, Alimarket)

Higher Consumption

Spanish consumption of processed pork products reached a record 543,000 tonnes in 2012 (+1.9% end product weight). However, value rose only by 0.3% to €4,547m as a result of a 1.6% fall in average prices. (Source, Alimarket)

Companies Closing

Among the latest fatalities are Agroibéricos Deraza, Casa del Armiño, Famila, Jamones de Serón 1880, Martínez Barragán and Venancio Villanueva (Embutidos Kiliki). However, investment in the pork processing industry totalled €200m in 2012. New projects include Noel with an investment of €9m and Casademont wth €3m, both in Catalonia. (Source, Alimarket)

Ukraine

Belarus Imports Suspended

According to the official website of the State Veterinary and Phytosanitary Inspection of Ukraine, the state temporarily banned imports of pork and other meat products from Belarus following the death of pigs in the Baranovichskiy region. ASF is the suspected cause. (Source, PigUa.info)

Russia

Spanish Pork Fat Detained

During inspection in St Petersburg, customs officers detected non-compliance of marking to Russian veterinary standards on a consignment of pork fat from Spain. Samples of fat have been sent for laboratory analysis to confirm its safety. The consignment will be stored in a specialised warehouse until results are received. (Source, Pigua.info)

China

New major scandal

With consumer confidence already rocked by bird flu, the recycling of ‘gutter’ oil by restaurants and the use of rats and fox meat for lamb, a new major pork scandal has hit Mainland China. Two people hired by a county government in Fujian province to destroy pigs killed by infectious diseases have been detained for processing the carcases and selling the meat in neighbouring provinces. Some 40 tonnes of pork are thought to be involved over a 3-month period. The accomplices bought dead pigs from farmers at low prices and collected dead pigs dumped at the roadside. The business grew so big that they leased a refrigerated warehouse and hired three workers who are now at large. The meat was mainly used for processing. A further 32 tonnes of meat has been seized. The news has sparked a national outcry. The matter hit the front page of papers and China Central Television gave information on how to identify meat from sick pigs on smell, elasticity and colour. Hidden subsidies

A new book by Usha and George Haley of West Virgina and New Haven Universities unveils the hidden subsidies behind the industrial dominance of the new superpower. Yurun Group, the pork processor, comes second on the list with subsidies of £54m in 2011 alone, representing a third of net profits. Of course, a protected market, the undervalued currency, cheap labour and availability of credit also contribute to Chinese competitiveness. The major semi-private companies are very powerful and the removal of subsidies by the central government often results in provincial government increasing theirs. (Source, The Economist)

Argentina

Campo Austral new plant

The pork processor has opened a new abattoir and cutting plant in San Andrés de Giles employing 470 people with a capacity of 10,000 pigs per week and 36,000 tonnes of fresh pork and processed products. (Source, Eurocarne)
