Our scoping visit to India to push for access for pig genetics and investigate the opportunities for exports of processed pork products to this vast market attracted comments in the Indian press.
British Pig Executive Weekly Export Bulletin

Prestigious daily The Times of India featured a large article on page 2 titled “Pork may replace tandoori chicken” mentioning “…healthy pork with the world famous English taste”. The Economic Times also commented on our visit. A preliminary report on the Indian market is available from the export office. Meanwhile, the deal on pig semen access with China was mentioned in the Financial Times, the Guardian, the Independent, the Daily Telegraph and Chanel Four News among others.

Although, we are in theory able to export pork products from the UK to India, the current situation is very difficult. New bureaucratic difficulties have resulted in containers being blocked at ports. Three major food consolidators have pulled out this week from the Indian market. The situation should clarify but not before the May 2014 elections.

The event diary for the first half of 2014 was sent last week to exporters by post. Key events include a small presence at Foodex in Japan next February, a much larger presence at Food & Hotel Asia in Singapore in April as well as SIAL Shanghai in June and CIMIE in Beijing in June alongside the World Meat Congress.

France

Hénaff not for sale

In spite of a difficult year, Arnaud de Belloy, head of the Nestlé subsidiary Herta (Charcuterie) claims that the company will survive the current difficulties by maintaining their objectives. Following six years of growth, 2013 results are negative with turnover down by 1.5% and volumes down by 2%. The main reason for this decrease is the removal of two products (Tendre Noix and Bon Paris cooked ham) from the shelves of Carrefour and Système U. Mr De Belloy is optimistic, he believes in the new environmental initiative “Herta s’engage” reflected by a new green logo and the investment the company has made in better food safety and healthier products (lower salt and fat). Finally the communication budget for 2014 will increase by 50%.

Green light for South Korea

Following an inward mission to Seoul led by Mr Garrot, Minister for agro-food, three charcuterie exporters: Mont de la Coste, Salaisons de l’Adour and Brocéliande-ALH have been approved to export to South Korea.

Markets

Pigs: The 56 TMP base price was €1.381 last Monday, the pig market is stable.
According to “Marché du porc breton”, supplies are high and one week of important activity is awaited in France. Last week there were record slaughterings of 397,511 head, in the Uniporc zone.

Piglets: The market remains fluid, prices are firm. The seasonal decrease in availability for piglets has helped balance the connection between supplies and orders. As a consequence, prices are stable.

Cuts: The season is generally not great for the consumption of pork meat in France but sales are still reported as good.

Denmark

Vion deficit

The Dutch-owned food group VION has published accounts for 2012, which show a deficit of €830m. This is due to a number of changes, which resulted in significant one-off depreciations on investments. Vion’s revised strategy has resulted in a large number of affiliated businesses being sold. In 2012, VION’s revenue was €9.7b. At the beginning of 2013 VION had approximately 21,000 employees.

Markets

European meat markets remain unchanged. Demand is fine, indications are that prices have peaked and may come under pressure in the coming weeks. As to third country markets, there are lower shipments to Russia with unchanged exports to other markets.

Germany

Higher supplies

For the impending quotation, slaughter branches are claiming a further reduction in the recommended price of €0.06 per kg due to the high supply of slaughter pigs. This will result in the new price quotation on Friday being €1.60 per kg for class E pigs. High slaughterings last week resulted in good availability of pig meat and prices for hams and loins are already showing a weaker tendency. In 2013 as a whole, producer prices for E class pigs have been around the €1.70 per kg mark which is similar to 2012 price levels.

Vion plant closure

In recent weeks, VION has announced the closure of slaughterhouses in Minden and Kasel-Golzig and the convenience site in Wunstorf. On Friday, Vion announced the closure of the pig slaughterhouse in Weimar. The site is a relatively small unit; the previous week’s kill totaled 8,000 pigs. Pig supplies will be diverted to other VION companies in Altenburg (Thuringia) and Crailsheim (Baden-Württemberg).

Belarus

New investment

Israeli company AgriGo has established an integrated pig farm in Belarus, a complex project with an investment of €17m. The farm has a total built area of 20,000sqm and 7,000sqm of wastewater treatment reservoirs. It has an expected production capacity of approximately 3,000 tons per year live weight.

Ukraine

Higher pig population

According to the Ukrainian State Statistic Service, during the January to November 2013 period the pig population increased 4.3% totaling 8,312,100 head. The population of pigs in private households decreased slightly (0.2%) while the population of pigs in commercial pig-breeding complexes increased by 9.7%.

Russia

Lower imports

According to Federal Customs Service data provided, in November 2013, Russian pork imports decreased 13.8% compared with November 2012 valued at US$200.6m. Total meat and meat products to Russia in November decreased 5.8% in volume terms.

Higher pig population

In the year ended November 2013, Russian meat and poultry production increased by 5.4% compared with the same period in 2012 to 10.7 million tonnes. Specifically, pork production increased by 11.6%.
