European pork exporters have once again proven forecasters wrong. By the end of October, EU exports were up 1.4% for the year to 2.58m tonnes. In contrast, US exports are down 6.2% to 1.76m tonnes. All markets performed well last October.
British Pig Executive Weekly Export Bulletin

BPEX and EBLEX will be busy again in Asia this year. In China we are planning a presence at SIAL (May, Shanghai), FHC (November, Shanghai), CIMIE (June, Beijing), CAHE (livestock, Qingdao) as well as the new World Food exhibition in Beijing next November. In Hong Kong, we will again attend the successful Restaurant and Bar show in September, in Japan Foodex and FHA in Singapore. Please note that our 10 booths for FHA are already fully booked. In addition, two technical and political visits to China to discuss veterinary matters and market access (trotters!) are already planned for January and March.

France

Les Brasérades prepared meals

The range of “Les Brasérades” three prepared meals, including sauerkraut, knuckle with lentils and cassoulet, has now been complimented with two new recipes: Lyon sausage with potatoes and “aligot” (potatoes and cheese mix) with prime sausages.

Black pigs saved by PDO

PDO status has been allocated to the Corsican pig breed “Porcu Nustrale”. This breed is now used by 90 breeders producing ham (prisuttu), loin (lonzu), and coppa (fore-loin sausage). Pigs are slaughtered at a minimum of 12 months of age (15 to 18 months on average) with a minimum carcase weight of 110kgs. The pigs are fed outdoors with 2kg per day of cereals and oilseeds and the finishing diet includes a mix of acorns, chestnuts and barley.

From two boars and 30 sows in 1980 the “Noir de Bigorre” herd was saved by the prospect of gaining PDO status. Pigs are also slaughtered at a minimum of 12 months (15 months on average) and weigh 130kgs, 70% of fresh meat, ham and charcuterie products are sold through the marketing structure “Porc noir de Bigorre” and a further 12% sold direct by producers.

Markets

Pigs: The market is firm, the 56 TMP base price gained €0.009 last Monday at Plérin.

Piglets: The French piglet market remained firm, especially with an upturn in the Butchers’ Pork market. Offers remain measured and prices are stable. The FNP-FNCBV prices lost €0.002 cents for 25kgs pigs and €0.46 cents for 8kg piglets.

Cuts: The Rungis market index (IMR) lost 1.2% between November and December. The 56 TMP base eased by 1.7% during the same period. During 2013 as a whole, prices mainly increased compared with 2012, with the exception of Back fat, rind-on which lost 12% and Trimmings which eased by 3.9%.

Denmark

Danish Crown closures

A 20% drop in the number of finishers over the past five years in Denmark has cost jobs at Danish Crown. In a comprehensive restructure plan for the Danish part of the group, it has been decided to shut down the boning factory on Funen. In addition, it is considering closing the sow slaughterhouse in Skaerbak and the slaughterhouse at Bornholm. 800 employees will be dismissed by 2016 at the latest.

Progress for Danpork

The small privately owned slaughterhouse Danpork, managed by majority shareholder Leo Groenvall, exporting to the US, Canada, Russia, Japan and Australia, has prospered. Gross profits increased from €7.8m in 2012, to €8.9m in 2013. The net profit increased from €470,000 in 2012, to €1.1m in 2013. The company has 123 employees. Danpork has applied for permission to expand production from the current 90 tonnes per day to as much as 350 tonnes.

Lean bacon from Tulip

Bacon consumption is growing significantly in Europe. Many people feel bacon is not in harmony with traditional dieting and therefore Tulip is launching a bacon with 30% less fat. According to Tulip, the fat reduction is done without losing the great bacon flavor. Because there is less fat in the new bacon, it will cook quickly and can be used in all dishes in which bacon is traditionally used.

Markets

Activity on the European market was reported as quiet with cuts trading at stable price levels. Exports on contract to the UK bacon market were stable with some pressure reported on day-to-day trading. For markets further afield outside Europe, it was also reported as quiet, notably the approaching Chinese New Year is likely to see this situation continue for a short period.

Netherlands

Van Rooi signals end to the price fall

With the rise of €c2 to €1.55 last week, the major Dutch slaughterer is betting on renewed optimism in the pork market. Hilkmann is even more upbeat with a rise of €c7.

Ministry “subsidises” sustainable production

The LTO sustainable project will benefit from four ‘research’ grants worth €400,000. The project has so far been supported by lobby groups Natuur en Milieu and Dierenbescherming along with research organisation LTO.

Spain

Agreement between ICEX and OECE

ICEX (Spanish Institute of Foreign Trade) has signed an agreement with OECE (Office of Meat Exporters for Spain) to join forces and develop promotional work to increase the presence of Spanish meat companies on international markets. Through this agreement, export seminars, presence at international trade fairs and workshops will be organised, together with a programmer of market research.

Germany

German pig market balanced

Following a small shortage of slaughter pigs at the beginning of last week availability increased significantly in the second half of the week. As a result, the recommended price remained unchanged. The current week shows a mostly balanced situation between availability and demand. Retailers have restocked their supplies and slaughter facilities are marginally reducing slaughter requirements. However, existing pig numbers are sold without problems. Prices for pork cuts are mostly easing as both domestic and international sales are comparably low.

EU

Production forecasts

The EU Commission released its latest "Medium-term outlook” with the prospects for agricultural markets and income. The European Commission expects a gradual increase in EU pig meat production this year after two years of decline in 2012 and 2013. The Commission predicts an increase in efficiency after the introduction of new welfare rules, which have forced a number of non-efficient producers out of production. However, only very modest production increases are anticipated until the year 2023 as a result of environmental regulations that will restrict production in a number of EU member states. By 2023 production is expected to be approximately 5% higher than in 2013.

Russia

Sausage production booming but not sucking in imports

Over the last ten years, Russian production of processed meat products has risen by 70%. Moscow, with 37% of production and Privolzhsky Oblast (200km northeast of Moscow) with 20% are the most important production areas. The old Moscow concerns Ostankino MPK, OJSC Cherkizovo MPZ, Mikoyanovsky MK remain the largest processors. In Privolzhsky, the largest processor is Pezensky MPK which is owned by Cherkizovo. Cherkizovo also owns the major Otechestvenny plant in Kaliningrad. Other large processors include Sochinsky in Krasnodar, PTC Nasl in Penza, Dubki and Rostovsky in Rostov. Overall production is about 3m tonnes. Home processing considered as more ‘natural’ is currently the major competitor and is putting pressure on manufacturers. The most profitable processors are Ostankino, Dubki and Velikulovsky (see below). Imports are rising but only represent 1% of the market. The USA and Lithuania, with 20% market share each, with US branded chicken sausages and Biolvela sausages respectively, dominate imports, followed by Dutch pâtés under the Groot brand with 15% market share and Latvian sausages under the Rezeknes Galas brand with 12% share. Byelorussian imports are rising fast too and are expected to grow market penetration. Russian imports could well rise to 60,000 tonnes over the next few years.

Decline of markets

Traditional Russian markets now represent only 10% of sales of processed meats with 130 medium and large retailers. Branded butchers’ chains owned by processors is a Russian phenomenon, with Velikolusky of the Pskov Oblast (near the Estonian border) the largest with 700 stores. Miratorg aims to have 1,000 stores in the medium term with an investment of R100b (£1.8b). Ostankino is also developing a chain of branded meat outlets. Supermarkets’ own label products represent only 3% of sales. The share exceeds 10% in five retailers: Maria-Ra with 17.3%, Auchan with 14%, Magnet with 13.2%, X5 and Metro both with 10.5%.

ASF vaccine development

The Russian R&D Institute of Veterinary Virology and Microbiology has announced that the first tests of a new vaccine to fight ASF were successful. The vaccine is being development in conjunction with Illinois University in the USA; tests should be completed in 2016.

Belarus

Ukrainian pork import ban

On 9 January, the Department of Veterinary and Food Surveillance in Belarus introduced a ban on imports of pigs and processed pork products from the Ukraine after a case of ASF was registered in the Luhanska oblast territory of the Ukraine.
