BPEX Export Bulletin - Week 7BPEX Export Bulletin - Week 7

Rosselkhoznadzor’s head Sergei Dankvert said that Russia's ban on EU pork imports in the wake of the African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreak in Lithuania could be lifted in two months at the earliest, whereas the ban on pork imports from the Baltic countries could continue for 3 years.
British Pig Executive Weekly Export Bulletin

The EU community reference laboratory has confirmed that, for the two cases detected in Lithuania, the same virus strain circulating in the Caucasian regions, the Russian Federation and the Belorussian 2013 Grodno outbreak. Tonio Borg, the EU Commissioner for Health and Consumer Policy, called the ban “unprecedented, disproportionate and violates international trade principles”.

No evidence has been found that Lithuanian domestic pigs have been affected by ASF with 359 pig keepers with 13,732 pigs located in the infected area. Lithuania has reassured that no live pig, reproductive material from pigs, pig meat, untreated pig products or unprocessed animal by-products from pigs from the infected area will be dispatched out of the country and that no meat or animal by-products from wild boar from the whole of Lithuania can be dispatched. Meanwhile, Russian pork secondary processors (eg sausage manufacturers) are drastically short of pork. It is clear to see that their lobby is nowhere near as powerful as the large meat groups.

France

PGI for rillettes

Eight French pig producers are involved in the production of “Rillettes de Tours”. The special local recipe requires the browning of the meat at the start of the cooking process finishing with slow cooking in a traditional cooking pot. This traditional product now benefits from European PGI status which should attract more producers to the scheme.

New project for cooked with Ranou

Jean-Pierre Ropars, Managing Director of Ranou which is Intermarché’s own brand charcuterie production unit owned by “Les Mousquetaires”, is opening a new satellite facility. A new plant will be built on 6 hectares recently acquired by Les Mousquetaires to complement the 600 staff factory located in Saint Evarzec, Brittany, which is almost saturated with a production of 25,000 tonnes of cooked ham annually. The plan is to open a new 5,000sqm site in 2016 with capacity of 16,000 tonnes of cooked ham which will be sliced and packed in Saint Evarzec.

JB Viande investment

The leader of the piglet market in France is benefiting from the “horsegate” scandal by purchasing the lasagna factory Fraisnor based in Arras, which closed down last year. JB Viande is planning to invest €6.7m in the plant (40 staff to be employed within three years) in order to consolidate the increasing export business to new markets such as Asia and North America. This will also be an opportunity to develop the “Porketto” convenience range of piglet-based products in France.

Markets

Pigs: The 56 TMP base price eased by €c1.6 last Monday, the cumulative decrease over the last four sessions is now more than €c7. On the French market, demand remained stable despite measured availability. Due to the persistent Russian embargo, operators are very cautious which has maintained pressure on prices this week.

Piglets: Sales of piglets remain stable. Weak supplies continue to support prices. The increase in FNP-FNCBV ceased and the prices have stabilised at €1.94 for 25kg and €33.24 for post weaning piglets.

Cuts: The market was calm for the beginning of the month. Low demand maintains some pressure on prices for some cuts, although prices remained relatively stable altogether.

More pigs in Denmark

Results from the 1 January pig count show the total pig population in Denmark to be 1% higher than a year ago. The population of slaughter pigs exceeding 50kg remains unchanged, while the stock of suckling pigs with sows and weaned pigs less than 50kg increased by 1.7% and 1%, respectively. As for breeding stock, the number of pregnant sows was 1.4% higher than a year ago, and the number of first time in-pig sows and gilts rose by 3.1% and 10% compared with the previous year. The figures indicate some optimism regarding the future production of piglets.

Markets

European markets are under pressure as a result of the Russian situation. Both chilled legs and other cuts are trading at lower prices. For the UK bacon market, prices also remain under pressure. On markets further afield, demand from Asia remained stable as was the case for exports to Japan. Although the Chinese are back following the Chinese New Year, prices on the market are under pressure.

Prices are bordering on the ridiculous with Spanish mixed pork chops promoted at €2.99 per kg and boneless loin steaks at €3.35 per kg in Continente. The largest Portuguese retailer outdoes the second largest, Pingo Doce which only manages €3.49 per kg. Interestingly, prices at Lidl are much higher as the hard discounter offers Portuguese pork.
