BPEX Export Bulletin - Week 15BPEX Export Bulletin - Week 15

Russia still requests regionalisation by country and, at their last meeting in Geneva, during the WTO SPS working group, Russia asked again for the Commission to exclude the 10 ASF infected Member State areas and their neighbouring countries.
British Pig Executive Weekly Export Bulletin

The Commission refused and no further technical meetings have been scheduled. On Tuesday, the EU referred the dispute to WTO. The increased prices on the market do not appear to be a problem for Russia - except of course for Russian consumers - as it serves its purpose in strengthening Russian meat production. Russia has one problem though, the lack of pork fat. UECBV is in contact with the Russian Meat Industry Federation to look for solutions on pork fat; no Member States are involved at this stage. Prices of £3.20 per kg for good quality back fat to Russia have been quoted by traders.

The Russian and Ukrainian turmoil and the shortage and high prices of pork in North America are creating a stir with the world’s pork trade. European pork is likely to be replaced by Brazilian pork in Russia while European pork looks to displace US, Canadian and Brazilian pork in Asia and Australia. Demand for pork at the Food & Hotel Asia (FHA) show in Singapore was indeed very strong. Some 14 British meat exporters attended the FHA exhibition on the joint BPEX-EBLEX British meat pavilion with an offer of pork, offal, premium pork, sausages, pork pies and ham. All reported brisk business during this very busy show.

France

Ham caviar

Dry ham is mainly consumed in sandwiches or chosen as a starter from the menu and occasionally as a main course. Increasingly, it is served as an aperitif and Aoste is launching the first dry ham spread: “Caviar de jambon cru” flavored with tomatoes or parmesan cheese. Aoste is also improving its aperitif range by segmenting it further with smaller portions of Serrano ham, chorizo and dried pork fillet.

Time is taste

Fleury-Michon has invested €30m in a high-tech factory located in northern France (Cambrai) which is dedicated to the production of superior quality cooked ham. The eighth largest factory of the Fleury-Michon group, 15 sites in total, produces 3,000 tonnes of cooked ham per year. This modern site uses robots and has a very sophisticated traceability system. Fleury-Michon guard their curing secrets very closely, kept in two secret bunkers at one site, with the curing broth being transported to their plants throughout France. Hams are injected by robot which moulds the hams into 22kg units, following a very strict specification. Hams are rested for four days before being sliced using laser saws, slice thickness cannot vary more than 0.1mm. The finished product leaves the factory seven days after the raw leg muscle is received.

Markets

Pigs: An improved 56 TMP base price was confirmed last Monday due to limited French supplies and improved orders, all in the context of a higher European market. According to Plérin market, this situation should continue.

Piglets: No change on the French market: limited offers, regular demand and stable prices. Last week, FNP-FNCBV indices maintained their upward trend, rising €c10 for 25kg weaners and €1.77 for 8kg piglets.

Cuts: Spring weather, the first half of the month and store restocking are favorable drivers for higher trade in the short term for fresh meat. Concerning prices, there is a continuing improvement for charcuterie pork products.

Market

On European markets, chilled legs are sold at slightly higher prices while most other cuts are mainly sold at stable price levels, the Easter trade will determine demand in the coming week on European markets. Prices for the UK bacon market remain stable, albeit at higher levels than a month ago. As to third-country markets, good demand has been reported on Asian markets with a slight increase in demand being forecast, competition from North American suppliers is quite limited due to their prevailing high prices. Exports to the US are stable.

Germany

Small price rise

While demand for slaughter pigs in Germany is still comparably high, available numbers have increased since the beginning of the week. However, several regions still report scarce numbers and overall capacity has not been completely filled. As a result, the recommended price was slightly higher at €1.63 per kg, up €c2. Demand is forecast to ease over the coming weeks due to the loss of several slaughter days over the Easter period. In addition, the colder weather has reduced barbecue activity throughout Germany.

Mexico

Growing imports

The growing gap between consumption and production underlines the country's need for imports. Over the past 22 years, consumption has increased by 3.15% per year while production has only increased by 2.3% per year. Mexican pig units remain generally small and not highly productive.

Ukraine

Crimea may experience pork shortage

Russia has forbidden the import of Ukrainian pork to the territory of Crimea. The Minister of Agriculture for the Crimea states that this will result in higher pork prices on local markets. According to the Minister, 60% of the pork and pork fat used by meat-processing enterprises in the Crimea came from the continental regions of the Ukraine. The situation will negatively impact the meat-processing industry in Crimea.

Russia

Import violations

Rosselkhoznadzor has prevented 19 tonnes of pork from entering Russia from the Ukraine as the consignment was not accompanied by any veterinary documents. Other goods prevented from entering Russia include: 43 tonnes of Brazilian pork neck as the exporting company did have approval for the Russian market, 25 tonnes of pork fat from Canada due to labelling violations and 13 tonnes of pork ready-meal product produced in Germany as the accompanying veterinary documents came from Moldova.
