Temporary measures to allow for the safe imports of live pigs from the US and Canada have been endorsed by experts at SCFCAH following pressure from the industry.
British Pig Executive Weekly Export Bulletin

Live pigs from these countries entering the EU will be tested for Porcine Epidemic Diarrhoea in order to protect the European pig industry from infection. These measures follow discussions held last week during the World Assembly of the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE). The Commission has also asked the European Food Safety Authority to carry out a scientific opinion on emerging PED viruses that will enable a more thorough review of the disease situation and risk mitigation measures.

France

A better life for pigs

On 5 June, the French Ministry of Agriculture was presented with a petition with 60,000 signatures. According to CIWF, it requests French and European ministers to enforce the rules designed to improve rearing conditions for pigs in Europe. CIWF claim that the welfare measures set up in 2003 have not been fully implemented and a letter requesting “better pig production” has been signed by European politicians including two ex-Ministers of Environment: Corinne Lepage and Chantal Jouanno.

Bioporc joins Cavac

The only 100% French organic pig meat processor (€13 million and 70 staff) has been taken over by the Cavac cooperative (€800 million and 1100 staff) which supplies them with 250 pigs per week. Cavac also collects 10% of French organic cereals. This new deal opens promising perspectives for Bioporc and the CEO, Jérôme Lebrun, is planning to extend the plant next year and to double the turnover of the company within 5 years.

La Lauragaise (ex-Spanghero)

Weakened by heavy finance leases, the company created by Laurent Spanghero in July last year, went into receivership. Mr Spanghero is trying to maintain the 100 jobs in place and is presently considering two separate offers.

Markets

Pigs: In spite of the Bank holiday in many States of the Union, pork butchers prices were stable last week. The German base price gained €c3, the Belgium price gained €c2 and in the Netherlands prices rose €c2. This increasing trend was also mirrored in the South; the Spanish base price gained €c2.2.

Piglets: Despite the increase in prices at pork butchers, the main European piglet prices oscillated between firmness in Denmark, Netherlands and Belgium and a decrease in Spain; this is due to increases in the first offers of the new season.
