BPEX Weekly Export Bulletin - Week 33BPEX Weekly Export Bulletin - Week 33

The effect of the Russia ban is limited for EU pork. It is not the case for Canadian exporters whose shipments account for the largest share of Russian pork imports. It looks like that these will be displaced by pork of various origins such as Brazil and China (the latter would mean much dearer imports) and more Canadian pork weighing on the world markets.
British Pig Executive Weekly Export Bulletin

According to Rabobank, PDEv will reach its nadir in September and the slaughter pig shortfall will decline towards June 2015. Losses in Canada are likely to increases.

HMRC data released this week shows that UK pigmeat exports in the January to June period were 11% higher on the year, at 95,000 tonnes, valued at £106m. Volumes shipped to Greater China amounted to 24,000 tonnes, accounting for 25% of the total UK export market.

France

The Russian ban on French pig meat

The Russian ban on EU pig meat started in February 2014, due to sanitary reasons (African swine fever). The recent extension of the Russian ban on EU food for one year will not favour the difficult commercial relationship with Russian trading authorities. France used to export 75,000 tonnes of pig meat to Russia (10% of total EU pig meat exports to Russia) representing €150 million but the total economic impact of this ban is valuated at €500 million.

Kintoa pigs

Basque products are currently very trendy and any food product with Espelette pepper (Basque pepper) sells like hot cakes. Along the lines of Bayonne ham, Basque charcuterie has become very popular and the production of Basque pigs is a profitable business. The Basque pig breed, known as Kintoa, is definitely resurrecting through the “Porc Basque” initiative, the association is desperately recruiting producers in the Basque country and neighbouring counties of Béarn. Finishers claim a margin of €100 per pig thanks to an advantageous payment grid and an efficient centralised feed buying system. The objective of the Association is to look after the interest of this initiative and to gain PDO status by the end of 2015. The designated area would include the Basque country (Pyrénées Atlantiques French “département”) located in the very south west of France and some areas of the Béarn region.

Markets

Pigs: The 56 TMP base price lost €c0.8 last Monday. Activity in abattoirs was sufficient (12,000 pigs) to meet current requirements.

Piglets: Prices are decreasing in Europe. Last week the FNP-FNCBV price lost €c4 for 25kg weaners and €c72 for 8kg piglets. Offers are high and prices remain under pressure.

Cuts: According to SNIV-SNCP, the decision of the extension of the Russian ban on all the porcine meats will be very bad for the EU companies working on the export markets.

Germany

Unchanged recommended price

During the first-half of 2014, 28.7m pigs were slaughtered in Germany, around 2% fewer compared with the same period in 2013. This trend has continued and currently pig supplies are reported as comparably low. However, supplies are more than sufficient for current demand from slaughter facilities. The ongoing summer holidays, wet weather and the Russian restrictions are resulting in comparably low pork demand. As a result, the seasonal trend of rising prices on the market that are typical, have not occurred. Several slaughter facilities have increased downward pressure on the market due to low meat sales. Despite this, the recommended price remained unchanged at €1.63 per kg.
