British Pig Executive Weekly Export Bulletin

UK pork exports in April fell by 7% in volume and 15.4% in value against April 2014 reflecting, unsurprisingly, the market access difficulties to Third Countries, the high Sterling and the fall of British pig prices. Over the first four months of the year, exports were down 4.6% in volume and 16.2% in value. We remain upbeat for the whole of 2015 and expect a recovery in volume in the second part of the year. What is more surprising is the collapse of Swedish exports by 98% in April against April 2014 after sustained good performance. Pork exports to Italy also fell by 94% while exports to France decreased by 58% and to the Netherlands by 20%. This was slightly compensated by the tripling of exports to Poland to 162 tonnes. Export figures to EU countries explain most of the variance are likely to be revised upwards over the next couple of months. Exports to Korea also fell sharply by 70% to only 69 tonnes. On the positive side, exports to Japan doubled to 193 tonnes.

Belgium

More plants to be approved for pork exports to Mainland China
Following the Memorandum of Understanding signed by Belgium Minister Wily Borsus, the Federal Food Safety Agency and Chinese authorities, four plants are likely to join the two that have been approved since 2009, subject to an inspection to take place this year. (Source, Pig Progress)

Denmark

Wood pigs
Some 500 skovgrise (organic wood pigs) are finished in a 9ha pine wood for the Irma supermarkets as a premium product. This small production started in 2010 but has not yet been developed. Fortunately, the trees are matured and appeared undamaged by the considerable rooting. (Source, Friland)

Markets
On the European market, chilled hams traded at slightly firmer prices while the trade for other cuts remained stable. The British bacon market was reported as stable at slightly higher prices. For markets outside Europe, a good trade to China and Australia was reported with stable sales to Japan.

 

France

Mr Le Foll in Brittany
Following several demonstrations, including blocking abattoirs, burning supermarket trolleys and unloading manure in various strategic places, French pig producers met Stéphane Le Foll, the French Minister of Agriculture last week at Ploërmel in Brittany. No violence was recorded, on the contrary an agreement was found: an official statement was published and from now on special offers for pig meat in French supermarkets will be limited to two months of the year, January and September. As far as financial support is concerned, Mr Le Foll will allocate €5 million to alleviate social charges for pig producers in difficulty. This envelope comes on top of €9 million already allocated to social charges (€4 million) and financial charges (€5 million). Finally, Mr Le Foll also suggested that a price system for cuts should be set up with the objective for the price of pig carcases of €1.40 per kg compared with €1.31 per kg today.

New products
Raffin is a specialist of “diots” (raw and smoked sausages from the Savoie region) and is launching a grilling version seasoned with soft pepper (4 sausages per pack).
Fleury Michon is launching a thinly sliced dry pork loin called Lomito (14 slices per pack).
Cochonou is launching new saucisson slices, 100% ham and 2.5 times less fat than standard saucisson.
Georgelin is launching a new very large range of pâtés with 15 recipes highlighting local products from different French regions.
Bordeau Chesnel, the French rillettes specialist, is launching grilled pork bites with different seasonings.

Markets
Pigs: There was a wide range of offers yesterday at Plérin due to unsold stock from last Thursday. Demand from abattoirs was stable with prices increasing by €0.4 per kg.
Piglets: The French market for piglets is still very prudent. Prices increased a little but operators are still under pressure. Offers are sufficient for a current stable demand. In contrast, the FNP-Coop de France indices gained €c5 for 25kg weaners and €c71 for 8kg piglets.
Cuts: If the seasonal increase in consumption is to be confirmed, the second half of the month and the imminent annual shutdown of school canteens may slow exchanges. The market is correct. Prices depend on the type of cut and are only higher for seasonal cuts.

 

Germany

German pig meat market under pressure
Difficulties on the German meat market have shown more influence on the slaughter pig market this week. Increasing pig prices over the last two weeks could not be achieved at retail and meat sales have decreased significantly. As a result, fewer pigs were cut; therefore slaughterers require lower pig numbers. Although pig numbers are currently comparably low, slaughter pigs have been harder to place, the problem was more marked in Southern Germany. Therefore, the slaughter facilities demanded a significant price decrease to stimulate the meat market. The recommended price has, therefore, eased by €c4 per kg. (Source, AMI)

Spain

Quality Standard Brand “Torrezno de Soria”
The Quality Standard Brand “Torrezno de Soria” has just certified its millionth product. Since 2013, this product (pork scratchings) has become one of the gourmet products of Spanish Gastronomy from the Province of Soria. They have produced nearly 600 tonnes of marinated pork belly with a value of €3m. (Source, Eurocarne)

 

Estonia

Cases of African Swine Fever persist in the Baltics
The provinces of Viljandi, Valga and Vöru in Estonia have recorded a total of 7 cases of African Swine Fever. The disease was detected in 9 wild boars, Latvia had another case. Poland has also notified the OIE of another outbreak in the province of Podlaskie. Germany begins to conduct drills for fears of an outbreak. (Source: Eurocarne)

Belarus

Increased production
According to official statistics data, in April 2015, slaughter pigs (in liveweight) increased to 33,200 tonnes, up 1.5% compared with March. The population of pigs on Belarussian pig-breeding farms in April totalled 2,598,100 pigs. (Source, agroperspectiva.com)

 

Ukraine

Lower pig population
According to the State Statistic Service of Ukraine, at 1 June the total population of pigs in Ukraine totalled 7,606,100 pigs. 3,786,200 pigs were on agricultural farms and 3,819,900 pigs in private households. At this level, numbers were 3% lower than on the same date last year. (Source, Proagro.com.ua)

Stronger pork price
On 15 June, the average pork price in Ukraine increased to UAH 32.5-33.5 per kg (US$1.47-1.52 per kg). As for the average retail prices, the average pork price was UAH 70.9 per kg (US$3.29 per kg), up 1.2% compared with the previous week. (Source, pigua.info)

Pork production increased
Pork production during the January to April period increased compared with the corresponding period in 2014. This year, Ukrainian processing companies produced 75,800 tonnes of fresh and chilled pork and 6,900 tonnes of frozen pork. (Source, pigua.info)

Russia

First consignment of pork from China
Last week, the first consignment of 40 tonnes of Chinese pork arrived to Khabarobskiy Krai via the border control station Pokrovka. The previous consignment of pork purchased from China was transported to Khabarovskiy Krai by sea, which was expensive. Now, shipments are possible via the Pokrovka station, transportation is cheaper and is estimated to take about 3 days. (Source, Kommersant.ru)

China

Fewer pigs
The latest census continues to show strong decline compared with a year ago. The total pig population in April amounted to 387.12m head, down 9.4% compared with April 2014. The sow population amounted to 39.74m (-14.9%). The reason for the decline in the pig population is the low pork price combined with very high feed prices. This has meant that the relationship between the pig price and feed price fell below 6 in 2014. Normally, 6 indicates breakeven in pig production. Over recent months, the price of pork has increased, and the relationship between the pig price and feed price is now above 6 with expectations of further rises. (Source, Markedsnyt)

New project in Liaoning Province
Huaxi Hope Tequ Group (????????) plans to cooperate with Liaoning Province to build production for 1m slaughter pigs and a meat processing plant for a total investment of 4.1 billion Yuan (£410m). (Source, CNAgri)

Ningbo Tianbang successful launch
Ningbo Tianbang Share Co. Ltd. (??????????) in Zhejiang Province invested 2.667 billion Yuan (£2.6b) in a 500,000 tonne capacity feed mill, a parents sow farm, a finishing farm, and waste disposal plant for the annual production of 150,000 tonnes of organic fertiliser as well as an abattoir and processing factory. Pork consumption (1)
Some 90% of urban shoppers buy pork once a week, with 28% of Chinese buying pork daily (albeit in small quantities) and a further 28% 4 or 5 times per week. In Beijing and Shanghai, three-quarters of the pork is bought from supermarkets against 35% for Guangzhou and 39% for Chengdu. Young people want fresh pork. Some 37% of the 18 to 30-year-olds consume pork daily (particularly families with children), as well as 34% of 30 to 40-year-olds, 31% of 40 to 50-year-olds with about 25% for older people. Many urban shoppers freeze pork and 70% of them consume it within three days. Shuang Hui is the biggest pork brand in China and is recognised by nearly 60% of the population. Local pork is preferred by the Chinese ahead of imported pork. There is no difference of appreciation between US and EU pork although the educated are willing to pay a premium of 4 Yuan per kg for European pork against 3.50 Yuan per kg for US pork. Educated shoppers are by far the keenest to buy imported pork. Quality and safety certification are the most important cues when purchasing pork, ahead of appearance, price, brand and shelf life in this order. The price and the imported origin of pork act as safety indicator for Chinese shoppers and meat safety remains paramount. (Source, Bai – China Agriculture University, IMS presentation)

Laos

More protectionism
Laos will temporarily stop importing pork for commercial purposes or family consumption, in order to promote and protect the domestic market. The measure will not increase the price of pork in domestic trade, being one of the goods controlled by the government, said Sithong Phiphakkhavong, Deputy Head of the Department of Livestock and Fisheries. The country counts 3m pigs, a number expected to increase by 6% annually.

Korea

Worrying epidemic
Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) is now a great public health concern in South Korea. Since MERS was first confirmed in Korea on May 20, 126 cases have been diagnosed and 11 deaths have been attributed to the disease, MERS is having a very negative impact on Korea’s economy as consumers avoid retail stores, restaurants and other crowded locations. USA

Chinese movement
The North American Meat Institute and the National Pork Producers Council are asking USDA to push China to move more quickly to reapprove 34 US pork processing plants for export to that country following remedial action. The delisted plant list includes facilities owned by many major US pork processors, including Hormel, Tyson, Seaboard, JBS, Indiana Packers and Smithfield. About half of those plants were delisted in the last six months of 2014, with most of the others delisted in 2013 and a few going back as far as 2007, 2008 and 2009. (Source, various)
