British Pig Executive Weekly Export Bulletin

All eyes are on Cologne where the Anuga fair opens tomorrow. All the main European pork processor and thousands of their customers will be present for this record edition on 54,000 square meters of exhibition space for meat alone. For information, the British pork, beef and lamb pavilion is located in Hall 6, C-D 40-41.
The mission to Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and Gabon that concluded last week visited a total of 12 importers in the three countries. We also visited their cold stores and looked at the frozen pork items. Pork comes mainly from the EU, Brazil and the USA. The main products include so-called ‘meaty riblets’, trotters and tails. Surprisingly, there is no demand for some offal like livers and maws. With four of the main UK exporters represented and with the attendance of four major trading houses, we hope that this mission will spur exports in this region of 29 million people (The interior of the DRC does not import meat due to the poor logistics).

France

Jean Hénaff, water & environment
The Jean Hénaff factory is located in western Brittany and specialises in the production of tinned “pâtés” made from pork primal cuts. The factory consumes 83,000 cubic meters of water per year, therefore, water management has become a priority. The factory has a biological water treatment unit, now registered ICPE (registered installation for the protection of the environment). After treatment, clean water is piped to a local stream or sprayed on fields, together with biologic, mud following a precise schedule of crops. Loïc Hénaff, President of the board, is keen on protecting the environment, he reduced the weight of the tins and made sure that the trays used for fresh products (the company started producing sausages in the 90’s) are totally recyclable. The Ratio gaz consumed per tonne produced also decreased by 8% between 2013 and 2014. Increasing factory insulation is the next project.

And the winner is …the market!
According to Jean-Paul Bigard, head of the Bigard meat group and President of the renamed “Sniv-Sncp”, now “Culture Viande”, the fixed price of €1.40 per kg is now history and there are three components in the price of pigs:

  • EU 28 production
  • Home demand and third-country demand
  • Price competitiveness

Mr Bigard does not believe either in a production price index based on production costs. According to the French National Pig Federation this attitude is suicidal for the industry.

Markets
Pork: The first session this week did not bring anything new for the French pig industry.
Between the European situation, balanced between stability and decline, the general weakness of French consumption, a lack of competitiveness on export markets and tense trade relations, the 56 TMP base price remained under pressure and lost €c1.1 per kg.
Piglets: With no improvement on the French pig market, the piglet market showed no great change this week. Trade remained slow with large supplies and prudent demand. Delays persist and continue to weigh heavily upon the price, which remains at its lowest level. As far as the FNP Coop index is concerned, there was a drop last week with 25kg weaners easing by €c4 and by €c72 for post-weaning piglets.
Cuts: With the start of the month and developments on the market the sector hopes to see some renewed interest from French households. This could result in some improved replenishment orders. No euphoria is expected, French consumption as a whole remains traditionally restless at this time of the year with looming tax deadlines resulting in low purchasing power.
