International Trade Highlights: The USDA Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) recently published February 2016 red meat trade data for the U.S. According to the data, during February, U.S. exports of beef and veal cuts and beef variety meats equaled 83,204 MT. This was up 1.1 percent over the previous month but was down 48.9 percent from February 2015. More specifically, exports of fresh, chilled product totaled 21,365 MT, which was 4.8 percent more than the previous month but was 58.1 percent lower than February 2015. Exports of frozen product totaled 33,419 MT, which was 4.9 percent less than the previous month and was 40.6 percent less than February 2015. During February, the U.S. exported 25,693 MT of variety meats. This was up 6.6 percent over the previous month but was down 47.3 percent from February 2015. Year-to-date beef variety meat exports were 2.2 percent above a year ago, amounting to 49,790 MT. During February, the U.S. exported 16,128 MT of beef to Japan. This was down 3.8 percent from the previous month. Year-to-date beef exports to Japan totaled 32,890 MT, 10.6 percent greater than last year. Japan was the leading beef export market for the U.S. with 19.9 percent of the total. U.S. beef exports to Mexico during February rose 8.9 percent from the previous month to 16,603 MT. Total yearto-date beef exports to Mexico were 17.8 percent lower than a year ago, amounting to 31,850 MT. Beef exports to South Korea rose 4.6 percent over the previous month to 11,781 MT. Year-to-date beef exports to South Korea equaled 23,044 MT, 28.2 percent more than last year. Overall, U.S. total year-to-date beef and veal and beef variety meat exports equaled 165,504 MT, which was 1.6 percent more than the same period a year ago.
