British Pig Executive Weekly Export Bulletin

The referendum whether to remain in the European Union has fundamental implications for UK meat exports to the EU and Third Countries and the meat trade in general. The statute of AHDB precludes us to take sides or comment on the subject. A good number of unbiased reports are available from trade associations.

Belgium

Record exports in 2015
The country exported a record 858,575 tonnes of pork in 2015. Unfortunately, the share of carcases in the export trade is still rising and accounted for 471,584 tonnes of total exports. (Source, Fleischmarketing)

Denmark

SPF takeover approved
The European Commission has approved, under the EU Merger Regulation, the sole control of SPF-Danmark A/S by Danish Crown. SPF is actively trading and transporting weaners, slaughter pigs and breeding animals in Denmark and abroad. (Source, European Commission)

Markets
On the European market, continued good trading was reported for fresh hind legs this week at similar price levels. Other cuts also traded at virtually unchanged price levels this week. The British bacon market was reported as stable. For markets outside of Europe, good trade has continued to both China and Japan. (Source, lf.dk)

Netherlands

Ukrainian chicken
We do not often mention the poultry sector, however, in this case, this news will have major implications for the entire EU protein sector. Ukrainian poultry giant MHP is planning to open a processing plant in Holland. The Ukraine produces chicken 40% cheaper than the Netherlands and the cuts will be labelled as “produce of the Netherlands”, which is of concern to Dutch farmers. The recent EU-Ukraine trade agreement allows the importation of Ukrainian poultry. MHP is supported by Dutch banks ING and Rabobank. MHP produces 330m chicken per year, 30% of which is exported. Topigs loses €1.7m in 2015
Pig breeder Topigs-Norsvin lost €1.7m last year due to the reorganisation of its Chinese business. Turnover was up €10m to €119.8m. (Source, Boerderij Vandaag)

France

Pork mince
Lidl has strengthened its minced pork range. On top of the pork stuffing with vegetables sold in 500g trays priced at €2.49 per pack, a plain pork mince version of the same weight is being launched with French pig meat at €5.98 per kg.

Basque red chili
Jean Rozé chipolatas could not resist the “Piment d’Espelette” fashion. Red chilli from the Espelette village in the Basque country are a growing trendy seasoning in France and SVA Jean Rozé has just launched a range of seasoned chipolatas: with Roquefort cheese, tomato and basil and with Espelette chilli retailing at €2.30 per pack of 6 sausages (300g). Also a 25% reduced salt version selling at €2.75 for the 300g pack completes the range.

New charcuterie site for Euralis
The French cooperative group invested €7.5m in a new site opened in Yffiniac, Brittany, designed to process 6,500 tonnes of charcuterie products; cooked hams, pâtés and cooked joints.

Herta turns veggie
The leading French brand which built its reputation with charcuterie products (cooked ham, sausages) has launched three new vegetarian meal solutions, steaks made with soya and wheat, vegetable balls and stuffed tomatoes where cheese replaces pork. The Marketing Director of the Nestlé subsidiary is anticipating 100% growth of this segment within 5 years.

Markets
Pork: Steady activity of both slaughter numbers and lower carcase weights were reported this week. The market is more fluid than last week with the 56 TMP base price increasing by €c0.3 last Monday at Plérin. According to “Le marché du porc Breton”, the abattoirs in Germany refused to apply the increase last Thursday.
Piglets: Prices are firm on the French market. Offers are stable and more moderate. Last week, FNP-Coop de France indices increased by €c6 for 25kg weaners and €c96 for 8kg piglets.
Cuts: Increased slaughter activity over recent weeks, and more generally during April and May, underlines the relative abundance of the French offer but also demonstrates a firmer demand from abattoirs. With the improved weather and the beginning of the new month, higher consumption is awaited in the next few days.

Germany

Tierwohl success
We can measure the success of the pig welfare initiative Tierwohl by the number of pig holdings on the waiting list: 2,400 at the moment. The number of pig and poultry holdings in the scheme stands at 2,900. (Source, Fleischmarketing,; Fleischmagazin)

Sausage marketing
Some twelve German processed meat brands, probably a record, have developed special versions of their products for the European football championship. Still on the marketing front, Reinert has launched a huge hot air balloon to promote its Sommer Wurst. This follows the sausage shaped street pillars in 2015. (Source, Fleischmarketing)

German recommended eases marginally
After several weeks with strong demand for slaughter pigs and pork cuts, the market has become much more unbalanced since last week. While the low numbers of pigs justified a further price increase, the meat market cannot keep pace. Cuts have been harder to sell and price increases are hard to achieve. As a result, slaughter facilities did not pay the increase of the recommended price last week. In the current week the overall situation has not changed significantly. There are still comparatively low amounts of slaughter pigs but the meat market still lacks impulse. Therefore, producers had to react and slightly reduced the recommended price to €1.51 per kg. Spain

Booming exports
Spanish pork exports in the first quarter were up 16% year-on-year to 355,000 tonnes with shipments to Third Countries driven by Chinese demand, now representing 35% of sales. We expect Spanish exports to continue their progression during the whole of 2016. (Source, Magrama, our comment)

Valls Companys wants to double production at Cinco Villas
Valls, with the support of the government of Aragón, want to double the capacity of the abattoir de Ejeo de los Caballeros from 30,000 to 60,000 per week. (Source, Eurocarne on line)

Greece

Catastrophic fall of retail sales
Retail sales fell off a cliff in the first quarter. Food sales are down a massive 13% in volume and 8.6% in value. “Consumers are cutting down on even the most basic of commodities, ranging from milk to washing powder”. (Source, Ekathimerini)

European Union

Controversial views on pork exports
Speaking at the European Pig Producers’ congress in Dublin, the Dutch pig economist from Wageningen University, Robert Hoste warned that “there is too much focus on export markets”. He adds: “Forget the better added-value (for export) as this creates risks of competition and scarcity". We beg to differ. (Source, Irish Farmers’ Journal, our comment)

Romania

Vascar applauds the cut of VAT
The cut of VAT on meat from 24% to 9% has been beneficial to pork processor Vascar. The company plans to double its turnover to €30m by 2017. The company owned by the Ciuburciu family operates a branch in Moldova and employs 300 staff. They produce sausages, bacon, pâtés and canned meats. (Source, the Pig Site)

Poland

Further fall of the breeding herd
The March census by the Polish Statistical Office (GUS) shows a further fall of the breeding herd of 16%. Over the last ten years, the Polish breeding herd has halved in size from 1.6m to 800,000 sows. The implication is larger imports of weaners, stores and slaughter pigs to supply the booming Polish processing sector, most of whom (Pini, Duda, Henryk Kania, JBB, HK Scan, Tarczy?ski) have announced expansion plans. For reference, Poland exported €197m worth of processed meat products to the UK in 2015, showing the fastest progression. (Source, IFIP)

Russia

Still the ban
Russian Prime Minister Dimitri Medvedev has extended the ban on European food to the end of 2017. (Source, Eurocarne on line)

Pork prices
Pork retail prices in Russia keep decreasing, according to the Federal Statistic Service in April 2016, the average Russian pork price RUB258.4 per kg (US$4.05 per kg), down 0.5% compared with March 2016 and 6.8 % less than in April 2015. (Source, soyanews.info)

Higher production
According to information provided by the Ministry of Agriculture, during the first four months of 2016, slaughter pig production in live weight increased by 14.6% or 139,300 tonnes to 1.1m tonnes. Production grew due to throughput results in Tver, Pskov, Voronezh, Kursk oblasts and Bashkortostan republic. In contrast, production in Rostov, Omsk, Murmansk oblasts, Altai Krai and Perm Krai decreased. (Source, meatinfo.ru)

Ukraine

Import update
During January to May 2016, the Ukraine exported 1,172 tonnes of fresh, chilled and frozen pork, which is 9.5 times less than during the same period in 2015. Import volume during the period were 1,910 tonnes, compared with 1,149 tonnes a year ago. (Source, delo.ua)

Import of port from Ukraine ceased due to the ASF threat
According to the head of the National Food Safety Agency of Moldova, Gheorghe Gaberi, the country is at risk from ASF. He said that there were several outbreaks registered in the Odesa oblast of Ukraine, the last of them registered 2km from the Moldavian border. To reduce the risk of spreading, the import of pigs and pork from Ukraine was temporary banned. Total population of pigs in Moldova is estimated at 700,000 head, 80% of which are in private households. There are also about 2,500 wild boars. (Source, moldnews.md)

Belarus

Pork price decreased
According to the report of the National Statistic Committee, during April 2016, the average retail price for boneless pork was BYR86,365 per kg (US$4.36 per kg) which is BYR851 per kg less than one month ago and BYR5,762 per kg less than in April 2015. (Source, pigua.info)

USA

New CEO for the National Pork Board
William Even has been nominated as CEO of the National Pork Board, the levy body in charge of promoting US pork. He has a strong background in agriculture and politics, and is a fourth generation pig producer. (Source, Pork Network)

Canada

OIymel buys La Fernandière
The Québec pork leader has bought sausage manufacturer La Fernandière in Trois-Rivières. It plans to triple production to 15,000 tonnes and increase staff number from 80 to 120. (Source, Canadian Manufacturing)

Argentina

BRF meets Macri
The Brazilian meat firm met with Argentinean President Mauricio Macri. BRF recently invested £200m in Argentina, buying pork processors Southern Field and Chalchaqui, stating its aims of expanding the business. BRF now operates 9 plants in Argentina. (Source, Global Meat News)

China

Environmental controls on pig farming
Some 21 provinces and cities mainly in the South and the central coastal area have launched designation proceedings for pig free zones. Most provinces plan to finish this work before the end of 2016 and legally complete shutdown or remove before the end of 2017. This will mean further tightening of supplies as new pig production capacity in the West, North and East will take time to happen. (Source, CNAgri)

New subsidy programme
The Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Finance made a joint statement on pilot subsidy scheme for high quality breeding pigs in Hebei, Shandong and Hunan province of Yuan 2,000 (£200) per boar and Yuan 1,000 (£100) per sow. (Source, CNAgri)

New project for Muyan
Muyuan Foodstuff and the government of Tongxu county (Henan province) have signed a cooperation agreement for an investment of Yuan 600m and the production of 550,000 slaughter pigs and 360,000 tonnes of feed. (Source, CNAgri)

SIAL success
The 17th edition of SIAL Shanghai in May attracted 77,000 visitors, up 25% on 2015, confirming the success of the fair. The number of the exhibitors from 67 countries was up 7% at 2,942. (Source, SIAL)

Vietnam

Reorganisation of pig abattoirs in Ho Chi Minh City
Municipal authorities in Ho Chi Minh City plan to modernize and centralize all the city's abattoirs at the end of 2017. Abattoirs without a license, manual as well as small and medium sized slaughterhouses, will be closed and replaced by six modern plants with a total capacity of 10,000-15,000 pig per day located in the Hoc Mon and Cu Chi districts. Taiwan

Pressure mounts against ractopamine pork
The Kuomintang and two smaller parties have clashed with the Progressive Democratic governing party in order to maintain the ban on US pork containing ractopamine residues. There were more demonstrations by protesters and farmers outside Parliament, while inside KMT deputies tried to stop the debate. In addition, Chiayi City Council has enacted new legislation banning the pork. Other local administrations have also put pressure on government. (Source, Focus Taiwan)
